With the war on terrorism becoming more and more violent, US officials are looking for a way to stop the violence that Al Qaeda is inflicting on the United States of America. Al Qaeda isn’t a new problem to the United States. Al Qaeda is defined as “a radical Sunni Muslim organization dedicated to the elimination of a Western presence in Arab countries and militantly opposed to Western foreign policy: founded by Osama bin Laden in 1988” (Dictionary.com). “In approximately 1989, bin Laden and co-defendant Muhammad, Alef founded “Al Qaeda,” an international terrorist group. This group was dedicated to opposing non- Islamic government with force and violence. One of the principal goals of AL Qaeda was to dive the United States armed forces out of Saudi Arabia and Somalia by violence”(Al Qaeda). Bin Laden, the founder of Al Qaeda was a very cruel man that only cared about his power within the world. Al Qaeda means “the base” in Arabian. Al Qaeda’s base, or headquarters, was established in Khartoum, Sudan, in 1991. “Al Qaeda has become an organization with affiliates and supporters across the world, and has carried out some of the most violent and famous attacks in the last twenty-five years” (Rukmini Callimachi). Bin Landen was one of the biggest supporters of Al Qaeda through money and weapons. “Bin Laden and others provided currency and weapons to members of Al Qaeda and associated terrorist groups in various countries throughout the year” (Al Qaeda). Osama bin Laden became the prime financier for Al Qaeda in the mid 1980’s. Al Qaeda is an organization that recruits Muslims from Mosques around the world. “According to Bin Laden’s 1998 fatwa (religious degree), it is the duty of Muslims around the world to wage holy war on the US American citizens, and Jews” (Laura Hayes, Borgna Brunner, and Beth Rowen). “Kidnapping for ransom has become today’s most significant source of financing,” said David S. Cohen, the Treasury Department’s undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence in a 2012 speech.” “Each transaction is encourages another transaction.” “Although the kidnappers threaten to kill their victim, a review of the known cases revealed that only a small percentage of hostages held by Al Qaeda affiliates have been executed in the past five years, a marked turnaround from a decade ago, when videos showing beheadings of foreigners held by the groups franchise in Iraq would regularly turn up on social media websites” (Rukimini Callimachi). From 2010- 2013 45.6 million dollars have been paid to the Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula for kidnappings (Rukimini Callimachi). After receiving funding, Al Qaeda set up training camps for terrorist in the war- torn nation of Sudan. “Al Qaeda’s central government in Pakistan was overseeing negotiations for hostages that went as far as Africa” (Rukimini Callimachi). Terrorism is throughout the world especially through the actions of Al Qaeda. Europeans were the most kidnapped people in the world because the European government paid ransoms where Al Qaeda will release their people. European governments deny paying any type of ransom, but through an investigation through the New York Times, it was found that Al Qaeda and its direct affiliates have taken in at least $125 million in revenue from kidnappings since 2008. This Muslim led organization has progressed tremendously in a negative way so we still have a lot more work to do to shut down this organization. “Despite nearly a decade of war, Al Qaeda is stronger today than it was when the organization carried out the 9/11 …show more content…
These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steal of American resolve” (Aaron Y. Zelin). Al Qaeda has tested our nation’s patriotism in many of ways by testing the faith of not only the American people but people across this world. “While the war on terrorism has cost the US some 1 trillion al Qaeda remains a global threat. In fact, in August 2008, Ted Gistard the US government’s senior terrorism analyst said in a report that by forging closer ties to Pakistani militants, al Qaeda is more capable of launching an attack in the US than it was in 2007. The Pakistani militants have given al Qaeda leaders a safe haven in remote areas to train recruits” (Laura Hayes, Borgna Brunner, and Beth Rowen). Al Qaeda has carried out many attacks on the world, but a few
