The dramatic film Akeelah and the Bee is a very touching movie that demonstrated several characteristics of a servant leader by both Akeelah and Dr. Larabee. Examples of these were Listening, healing, and conceptualization. In addition, the actors displayed interesting scenes where the form humility came before honor. This is a movie that brings laughter, tears and joy. The film is about an 11 year old girl who could spell better than anyone in her school. However, her confidence would have to be built for her to even consider trying out for the national spelling bee contest. Not only will emotional healing take place for Akeelah, it will also take place for her spelling bee coach. The main characters were Akeelah, who was played by KeKe

For instance, Akeelah is being raised by a single mother who is working consistently day and night, also she has a brother that hangs out with gang members, and also Akeelah has multiple absenteeism’s from the school that could cause her to serve detention. In addition to all these things, she is unsure of wanting to be in the national spelling bee, because she does not want to be labeled as a “Brainiac “among her peers within her school. All though it may have appeared that Akeelah had every difficult reason not to excel, the consistent pushing from her coach brought out the leader and the winner that was in her. In servant-leadership the leader recognizes a person’s abilities first before they see their own abilities. Servant leadership serves one before serving themselves. Spear and Lawrence pointed out that listening is one of the ten characteristic required of a servant leader. (Spears & Lawrence,). Within this characteristic the leader has to demonstrate that he or she seeks to listen receptively to what is being said and not said .Dr. Larabee listens to Akeelah as she spelled at the first spelling bee within the school. From the first moment of listening to her spell, Dr Larabee determined that Akeelah had a gift that was enormous to possibly take her to the national spelling
