Published on April 14, 2011, Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor follows the journey of Sunny Nwazue, an American-born albino living in Nigeria with her non-magical, or Lamb, family. Discovering her magical abilities as a Leopard person and "free agent," Sunny joins a group of fellow Leopard students, consisting of Sasha, Chichi, and Orlu, who are all taught by Anatov to master their powers. Together, they face the challenge of tracking down a corrupt scholar with magical abilities, Black Hat Otokoto. Hence, as the teacher of Sasha, Chichi, Orlu, and Sunny, he subtly encourages open dialogue about flaws while fostering an environment where individuals can confront their vulnerabilities to learn the strength within themselves. Moreover, welcoming even the most serious flaws as part of one’s identity can lead to an exploration of inner power. Anatov states, ‘“They said [Orlu] had a learning disorder called dyslexia.The moment the teachers told Orlu’s parents this, they were elated.And to have such a serious ‘disability’ meant his talent would be amazing’” (Okorafor 115). Dyslexia can be incredibly frustrating for the recipient because they struggle with processing words and letters, often resulting in poor grades. Orlu experiences these struggles daily. However, his mother and father celebrate embracing imperfections by reacting positively to Orlu’s medical condition.
