After the outcome of Odysseus being rewarded the coveted armor for conquering Troy, as many of its prisoners stated that he was in rightful ownership for his respecting characteristics, in relation to Ajax, consequently, the son of Telamon was left in anger and resentment for his unrecognized efforts. Athena states, “he was aggrieved about the armor of Achilles”, therefore, this goddess of war and wisdom overthrew a madness, reckoning the mind of such a warrior for the additional reason being “he ran amok in his deranged condition, [so] I led him on, and drove him into a cruel trap”. Throughout the text, the madness which struck this warrior caused him to kill and hurt many animals such as herds of sheep, as he was no longer able to control his innermost feelings. Quite interestingly, it seemed as if Ajax was able to feel tranquility when he committed such actions, as his mind slaughtering such creatures, was like killing his enemies. For instance, in the text, when Odysseus questions, “Then why this onslaught on our livestock?”, Athena responds stating that “he meant to stain his hands with your blood”, evidently depicting the range of hatred and delusional actions in Ajax’s mind. (Dutta, 5) Moreover, the ruthless character of Ajax does not merely become dimmed from light, rather he continues further on this rampage, and exemplifies his ruthless and quite terrifying acts. In fact, Ajax leads all the animals “back to his quarters, as if they were men instead of horned beasts. And now he tortures them, still tied up, in his tent”. (Dutta, 7) The comparison which is being molded in the mind of this warrior, between a man and an animal, is quite deranged as they exemplify the unhealthy mindset of Ajax, and his misunderstanding of the status of a human relationship.
