What would a world without constant advancements in technology be? It is quite possible our society would still be crafting the wheel using a rock and stick as tools. Without continual advancements in technology, seemingly “necessities” of today’s generation such as a televisions, cars, and smartphones would simply not exist. The pioneering of such important inventions is what advances societies technology as a whole. Their flight opens up many positive effects in the transportation industry like globalization. The image shows the plane taking off and foreshadows the take off of globalization by expanding travel to the air. In “24/7 Late Capitalism and the Ends of Sleep,” Crary references how new technology can be very beneficial to society. Crary uses the idea of technology to help society reduce its need for sleep. An innovation like this would lead to an increase in personal time, productivity and consumption. He says the effects of such technology lead to a “state in which producing, consuming, and discarding occur without pause” (Crary 17). Other than the fact that the Wright brothers may have lost sleep while building the plane, there seems not to be an obvious connection between sleep loss and airplanes. The underlying connect is the advancement of technology in their time. Our society views the idea of sleeplessness as very futuristic comparable to how the airplane was viewed as futuristic for its time.Not needing sleep and the innovation of the airplane are both futuristic innovations for their time.
