Throughout my Air Force career, I have seen many different forms of negative behavior. Most of it has been words and attitudes. Whether it has been words out of anger, comments about certain ethnicities, or sexist remarks, I have heard it all. Words can do much harm to people while negative attitudes can do harm a unit and mission effectiveness. I found the Effective Negotiations module to be very interesting. The Diversity chapter, stood out to me as the most important. The reason why I say that is because the Air Force is a very diverse force. There are many lessons within the chapter that I feel are important during normal day-to-day interactions. There are members from different societies, religions, and ethnic backgrounds. Therefore, understanding diversity is a way for all Airmen to maximize their contributions to the Air Force. If people feel there are negative socio-behavioral tendencies (SBTs) around them, they will not be working to their full potential. This will lower mission …show more content…
This is referred to as collusion and is one of the many SBTs. According to the Diversity chapter, “Collusion occurs when people cooperate with others, knowingly or unknowingly, to reinforce those behaviors that prevent others from fully entering into the workplace culture.” (Course 15). The three different types of collusion are silence, denial, and active participation. This is the lesson concept I find most valuable. The reason why it is the most valuable is because I deal with collusion almost daily. The aircraft maintenance environment can sometimes be very negative when it comes to diversity. To be honest, I am guilty of all three types of collusion. Sometimes I have put a stop to inappropriate behavior and sometimes I have let it go. I realize this is not conducive to a professional environment and is a form of toxic
