Conceptual Model
First, we start with the practical concept of Safety Preparedness, which is the ability to ready, fortify and prepare an organization in advance to cope with reality of providing safety to the workforce. We operationalize Safety Preparedness using the constructs of Culture of Safety and Safety Process. Grounded in our review of the literature, we define a Culture of Safety as the underlying (Clarke, 2006) climate instituted (Fernández-Muñiz et al., 2009) in …show more content…
To operationalize the constructs into testable associations, we focus on the “client projects”. “Client projects” are discrete and measurable programs, contracts or projects directly executed for an external customer, as opposed to broader internal strategic initiatives not directly performed for a …show more content…
Hypothesis 1a - The Culture of Safety in a client project, within a firm, positively relates to the Safety Performance of the project.
Likewise, we anticipate client projects with the existence of comprehensive organizational control systems for producing safety (Fernández-Muñiz et al., 2007b; Reiman, & Pietikäinen, 2012), denoted as a Safety Process, will produce better safety results than client projects without effective control systems for producing safety.
Hypothesis 1b - The Safety Process in a client project, within a firm, positively relates to the Safety Performance of the project.
Hypothesis 2: Safety Performance and Project Performance
The second hypothesis describes a positive direct effect linage between the execution of a safety program in producing safety results and the overall operational and financial performance of the client project. We propose that client projects with better safety results will outperform client projects with weaker safety results. That is, we
