This Monday, Mayor of Jersey City, Steven M. Fulop proposed to legalize the use of all short-term sleepover service, such as Airbnb, which was legalized in many major city, except for New York. Travelers to Jersey City now can find a bedroom or even a couch to sleep for a price that is substantially lower than a regular hotel room. And Mayor Fulop thinks this legislation will bring about $ 600,000 to $1,000,000 to the city’s tax revenue each year, and it will be easier to monitor and regulate short-term rental business. Besides tax revenue and homeowners’ income, residents also point out that the renters will benefit and boost other local business, such as restaurants. However, some argue Airbnb will damage hotel business and bring disruptive effects on local housing market. And this seems to be the key reasons why New York State does not approve this short-term rental service site.
