Air Force Narrative

Improved Essays
Instead of preparing for the SATs and ACTs, I took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) to join the Air Force. Unlike most students in my high school, I knew that I wanted to join the Air Force. However, I spent months waiting to hear back from the so I continued to wait, even after numerous phone calls from other branches. I wanted to join the Air Force because my Grandfather served for 25 years and he was my hero. Therefore, I waited to reach my goal.

In March 2008 I reached my goal and I enlisted into the Air Force as a medic. My first assignment was on the Labor and Delivery unit. The first delivery I assisted in was a shoulder dystocia. I watched in awe as the nurses knew what do as soon as the Doctor said “shoulder dystocia”; mark the monitor, lower the head of the bed and apply pressure. After this delivery, I knew what I wanted to do, and that is to be a Labor and Delivery Nurse. I knew that if I wanted to get good grades I would not be able to work full time. After my time in the military, I enrolled in college to further my new goal to become a nurse.

When I was in high school, I did not receive good grades and I even dropped out, but this was due to a lack of motivation. After all the adversities I have experienced I now know what I want out of life and how to achieve it. Since attending Sacramento City College I have maintained a 3.5 GPA in all my classes. However, my application to nursing school in California was delayed to Fall 2018 due to being out of cycle and the long waitlists, so I looked into other colleges. My counselor told me about the University of Maine, and how I wouldn’t have to wait to start nursing

Once there I went towards the Marines (Later I did realize this wasn’t the branch I would’ve rather joined), and there I started, I took the practice ASVAB, I talked to them about what I wanted to get out of joining and why. As towards the end of the interview, they did ask for something I couldn’t provide, proof of residency. I thought that the Immigration card (DACA card) would work, but since the least you need to be when joining the military is a permanent resident, the Card didn’t cover that. The distraught that was on me when I realized some of the many things I couldn’t do due to my history, something I’ve wanted since a child. It was life learning of the many things in the near…

Prior to beginning the masters of occupational therapy program it was as if I was an ancient wanderer in the dark ages, eager to learn new ideas and discover new places not sure what the world would throw at me next. Over the next eight years I found myself at a series of personal crossroads one encounters during life’s journey. Not the crossroad where one sells their soul to the devil for some magical power. It was more of one of those forks in the road, a kin to the Robert Frost Poem, where one path leads to life A and the other leads to life B. Crossroads that impacted my future, shaped who I am and my character, influenced life changes, which led to a transition that will influence me and my family for generations to come. I come from…
