On November 17, 1775 the United States Army Field Artillery and Air Defense Artillery branches were founded by the Continental Congress. Field Artillery and Air Defense Artillery are separate branches. However, both inherit the traditions of the Artillery branch. There are many differences and similarities to both branches. For starters the mission of the Field Artillery is “to destroy, defeat, or disrupt the enemy with integrated fires to enable maneuver commanders to dominate in unified land operations.” To translate this, it is basically ground maneuvers and tactics on the battlefield to claim more territory on the battlefield and produce large amounts of enemy …show more content…
It was also known as the Artillery Corps and was authorized to display crossed cannons as the branch insignia in 1834. On February 13, 1901 the Artillery Corps was split into two components which were the Coast Artillery and the Field Artillery in identification of the variance in both missions and then on January 25, 1907 the Artillery Corps designation was dropped and Coast Artillery and the Field Artillery became separate branches of the United States Army. The Field Artillery batteries were consolidated and developed into six field artillery regiments. Then in 1921 and 1922 in recognition of the growing threat of air attack, two coast artillery regiments were activated as an antiaircraft artillery branch. The Coast Artillery and Field Artillery branches were consolidated into the Artillery Arm with plain crossed cannons as the Arm’s insignia in the Army Reorganization Act of 1950. The Air Defense Artillery branch came from an Anti Aircraft Artillery branch that was part of the United States Coast Artillery Corps and then later developed into a separate branch on June 20, 1968. By 1968 the Army recognized that with evolving technologies and the divergence of missions it was too great to maintain one branch and the Air Defense Artillery Branch was established on December 1, 1968, and the Air Defense Artillery was allowed to wear the modified Artillery insignia which was crossed field guns …show more content…
It has played a huge role in history and past wars and definitely a much needed asset in combat support and protecting the lives of soldiers on the battlefield and civilians. In just about every conflict we have been involved with the Air Defense Artillery has played a role, major or minor, and with or without the title of “Air Defense Artillery”. It is constantly evolving with air threats from other countries and updating technology to keep up with ongoing threats. One branch that for sure has a bright future and much needed in future
