Aibileen Clark In The Help

Aibileen Clark one of the major roles in the film ‘The Help’. She is a very loving, strong, independent women, who has been taking care of 'white babies' since she was a young girl. She can be shy when it comes to meeting other people, this is shown when she meets Skeeter. When she encounters Skeeter, she does not want to open up to her straight away. This character is important, as she was the first to contribute towards the novel Skeeter was writing. This soon to be novel was not just a book, but a way of showing everyone the maids personal perspectives on their lives they are forced to live.

Aibileen is a role model to whom ever she knows, her ‘white babies’, Skeeter, Minny and the whole of the black community. She continues to teach to people life lessons. Aibileen stood up in what she thought was right, and didn’t let anyone stand in her way. Even though she came from a disadvantaged family, she spends her own life continuing to help the lives of others.

She goes up against the stereotypical gender rolls of which men go out to seek jobs, and the woman of the house hold are left to stay at home to produce children. Where many other maids like Aibileen spend their lives looking after these white children rather than their own biological kids back at home. For example, Miss Leefolt hires Aibileen to take care of Mae Mobley, her 2 year old daughter. Miss Leefolt clearly loves her child, but does not take the time in her not so busy life to think about her daughter. The responsibility of looking after Mae Mobley is left in the hands of Aibileen, who has almost ‘adopted’ Miss Leefolt’s child from the amount of time she spends looking after her and teaching her life
