Aibibileen In The Book Thief

Decent Essays
Aibileen risked her job by writing the book in the first place. She knew that being a part of writing this book about their opinion would definitely increase the chances of her losing her job because it is against the law. Furthermore, most white people hate the idea of coloured people having those rights and the truth from their side being told. Aibileen knew that if her boss were to realize her part in the book, then she would lose her job because Miss Leefolt was just like all the white ladies who could not stand being humiliated. In addition, she wanted to fit in with the others who also followed Hilly. Not only does Miss Leefolt have the choice of firing Aibileen but Miss Hilly also has a say in the matter because Miss Leefolt follows what Hilly says and that is how Miss Hilly behooves to “inform you that you are fired, Aibileen. Even when Miss Leefolt did not want to fire Aibileen because she believed Aibileen was being honest, she fired because Hilly demanded her to.

When it comes to racial crimes and segregation there is nothing more depressing than talking about how many times our world has been through it. It has happened throughout our entire lives and sadly it still happens today. The devastation and violence from these acts have shaped the way our society is and it’s not necessarily good. As a white male I can’t say I have ever been part of any minority group, but as a white female in South Africa during the 1960s you could say it was quite shocking to be on the opposite side. In the book The Unlikely Secret Agent by Ronnie Kasrils a woman, Eleanor was living amongst the South African Apartheid.…

Throughout the book, Elie was always curious why nobody said anything about the whole situation of kicking the Jews into concentration camps. There were many predictions on why the townspeople remained complacent. Of course, this far in time, there is no longer a correct answer. Townspeople may have remained complacent for multiple reasons. One reason may be that they were scared of Hitler.…

There was no phone or mail services after the attack on the Twin Towers, leaving Stockett unable to contact her family to let them know she was ok. Feeling homesick from the lack of communication, she started writing in the voice of a maid she had growing up as a way to comfort herself, which conformed into the voice of Aibileen. Minny was formed from the attitude she started writing that didn’t seem to fit the Aibileen character she had formed. Eventually, she decided to write an actual book around the characters, set in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960’s right before the start of the civil rights movement. I believe Stockett also wrote the help to confront the problems she had begun to discover about the “relationship” with her and her maid growing up; she spent more and more time writing in the maid’s point of view serving a white family during a time period where life was a game of chance if you were a black…

Based on “The ABCs of Summer Reading”, The Good Thief by Hannah Tinti fit two of the author’s criteria for a good summer reading book. With The Good Thief, the peculiarity of the main character caught my attention, and I thought it was interesting he only had one hand. In The Good Thief, Ren, our protagonist, only has one hand, and he doesn’t know why. However, when Benjamin Nab adopts Ren from the orphanage, Ren is thrown into Benjamin’s dangerous life of thievery, trickery, and lies, and he soon finds out the truth about who he is and who Benjamin is. This book didn’t fit all the criteria that the author of “The ABCs of Summer Reading” suggested.…

In The Book Thief, there are many different occasions in which you see the power of words. Some of those instances are described by the power that Hitler has influenced the German people. These instances where words are described to have that much power have been translated to current times. The author, Jodi Picoult, gives another of her characters a change of attitude near the end of the book. A white woman suddenly becomes able to understand the life experiences of people of color, and preaches that she shouldn’t be able to speak for black people, because she herself isn’t black, and therefore can’t truly understand their feelings. This was somewhat hypocritical, considering the author is white and writes from the viewpoint of a black person. The author does as good of a job as she can, yet her experiences still only give her…

“The gates of thievery would open just a crack, and Liesel Meminger would widen them a little further and squeeze through” (Zusak 79). At that moment, Death asked: “would they have the goodwill to let her back out?” (Zusak 79). Both Rudy and Liesel steal throughout their time on Himmel Street and symbolically, others do, too. But do the “gates of thievery” ever fully close, or are they left open just a crack, so the good ones can sneak back out? In The Book Thief, Markus Zusak uses the motif of crime and stealing as fulfillment for the characters lost sense of power and control, their basic needs, and relief and healing for their pain.…

The two texts are alike in that they portray this idea through the use of two of the main African American maids; Odessa from The Long Walk Home and Aibleen from The Help. Both characters show a deep connection with white children due to their caring and nurturing personalities , which is seen through the use of characterisation. The impact of Aibleens sons death provoked her to become a maid. The impact of tragic death was an influence, which empowered Aibileen to teach children who she raised that the difference of colour in skin is not a problem, but the theme of love and kindness is what mattered for this character. In a similar vein, the film directed by Richard Pearce demonstrates Odessa’s connection with raising white children, as Odessa is hired by a wealthy family to complete house duties, as well as occupy Mary Catherine (Miriam’s youngest daughter) .…
