Ahamed: An Interview With An Ethiopian Immigrant

Improved Essays
Ahamed is one of the interviewees who I met at work. He is an Ethiopian Immigrant and is of African American descent. I can tell he is polite from our earlier conversations before our actual meeting. He is heavily built and appears to be in his mid-thirties. He is full of humor and has a charming smile which is evident from his constant teasing about how formal I look. The conversation kicks off with where he lives and how his experience has been residing in the United States. He speaks very softly and says, “We live in a small gated community in the heart of the city, with my elder brother and younger sister.” He explains that his family moved to the United States in the early nineties and they first lived in Texas before moving to Columbus.

As stated by the Migration Policy Institute, as of the year 2015,“Approximately 235,000 Ghanaian immigrants and their children reside in the United States and account for 0.3% of the US foreign-born population. On October 15th, 2012, my Ghanaian family and I immigrated to the United States, “the land of freedom and opportunity”, hence contributing to the statistic. Like other immigrants, we relocated here for better economic and educational opportunities Although I am a native English speaker, I occasionally found it difficult to communicate because of the unfamiliar American diction. Ghana is one of the five Anglophone West African countries; because the country was colonized by the British during the 1800’s till 1957, when she gained independence,…

I believe there are no words that can describe the African American experience from throughout 1609-1865. Although if I were to choose one word to describe African American history at the time I would it as a dark time for African Americans because many slaves were beaten to death abandoned on ships and some did not survive the ruff life of slavery. By 1850, ninety-two percent of all American blacks lived in the South, and about 95 of the 92 percent were slaves. The Societies of the North and South were very different. Pre-civil war slaves in America went through a great deal of chaos and sadness in the South.…

Can you imagine a world without pizza and Santa Claus? Rudolph would face unemployment and, arguably worst of all, everyone would have to find a new favorite snack to fill the void left behind by pizza. This would be the fate of our country had it not been for immigrants, who have given our country many of its most famous cuisines and traditions. Black Americans are famous for overcoming slavery and inspiring many of the music genres we love today. People admire Caucasian Americans for braving North America’s harsh wilderness and later founding the United States.…

As an immigrant, my background is something that follows me and will stay with me for a very long time, even if it is something that I did not do. As an illegal immigrant, I was brought to the United States at the young age of five, and because of this, my life has been very different from most of my peers. I do not blame my parents for doing what they did. They wanted the best for me, and they did what they believe to be the best thing for me. I lived with the constant fear of my parents being deported, and my family separated which in turn made me into having a negative look on things.…

Kelley, the african diaspora is the “experiences of african peoples dispersed by the slave trade and [it is] also an analytic term that enabled scholars to talk about black communities across national boundaries. Much of this scholarship examined the dispersal of people of African descent, their role in transformation and creation of new cultures, institutions and ideas outside of Africa” (par. 5).…
