I hope you’re well!

I am a member of a project team here at Cornell called AguaClara. The goal of our team is to create sustainable water treatment designs that uses no electricity, and can provide clean drinking water to people around the world. I believe having access to clean drinking water shouldn’t be a luxury, but a human right.

AguaClara has built several water treatment plants in Honduras and India. Currently, AguaClara’s technology provides clean water approximately 50,000 people! I am so proud to be a member of this team and further our abilities to create cleaner and safer water for people around the world.

I along with several other students will be going on the trip to Honduras this January! For me, it has been such a life-changing

The French settlers arrived in Louisiana in the 1800s with their dog beauceron. They told of strange looking dogs with haunting glass eyes that were used by the Indians to hunt game in the swamp. It is thought the Beauceron and Red Wolf/war dog were interbred to produce the Catahoula. One theory as to the origins of the breed states that the Catahoula is thought to have descended from "war dogs" (Mastiffs and Greyhounds) brought to Louisiana by Hernando de Soto in the 16th century. Dogs left behind by the explorer's party were interbred by the local natives with their domestic dogs.…

I find the tenacity of the people I met in Tegucigalpa, Honduras to be particularly inspiring. I traveled to Honduras the summer prior to my ninth grade year with some members of my church and my family. I had virtually no idea what to expect. When we landed, I was shocked at how modern everything seemed. It’s hard to visualize countries like Honduras as being modern, but at first look Tegucigalpa certainly appeared to be ̶ our very first stop was actually a Kentucky Fried Chicken of all places.…

Chile is an export driven economy, meaning that their exports compose a very significant portion of their economy and any potential internal growth. To really understand why today we see Chile as an export driven economy let’s start by taking a look at the history of how Chile was able to increase their GDP with trading. In the 17th century Chile had a husbandry and agriculture based economy with ore-rich districts like Potosi and other wealthy cities like Lima. Those Husbandry products which included suet, charqui and leather were the bulk of Chilean exports to the rest of the viceroyalty. With these trades made Chilean historian Benjamin Vicuna Mackenna labeled as the Century of suet of the 17th century.…

Hello, I am Geoff Barnes and I am here with Kirralee Bishop to debate the factors contributing the design of Teotihuacano architecture. Was Teotihuacan designed for Aesthetics or Ritual? The monumental architecture in the heart of Teotihuacan creates a unique sense of place. The scale of the pyramids, the far reaching stretch of the avenue of the dead, the symmetry of the walls, the rhythmic placement of the temples and highly decorated dwellings, filling the visitor’s peripheral vision, immersing them in the space, giving confirmation to one’s place in the world (Pallasmaa 2005, 11-13); a city of power and order.…

    Drinking Water Cases

Although this video is slightly outdated, it still represents relevant information regarding our health and right to drinking water. I found the video's initial claim that by 2030 two-thirds of America's population would not have sufficient access to water quite startling because I think most people take drinking water for granted. Additionally, I do not think cases like these presented in this video are shown on television or the news as often as they should be. I believe the reason for this is because these water companies have become so large and powerful that indeed "citizens come second" in these cases. Furthermore, after the Supreme Court's 2010 decision in Citizens United, "not only do corporations have rights, their rights are stronger…

In a world where access and portability are the number one requirement for most resources or novelties, it would seem a debate has risen in the wake of progress. Bottled water or tap water, and which is better for the world. Hands down, bottled water is the clear choice here, it is healthy, portable, exportable, and most importantly accessible to everyone. Around the world tap water is sparsely available to the people who need it. “783 million people do not have access to clean water and almost 2.5 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation.”…

1.0 HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF ENGINEERING Science and Engineering can be a regarded as an inseparable concept to which modern engineering depends. Engineering was first practiced from man’s mental capacity that fashioned him into recognizing tools and natural resources around him and developing on that for his own benefit. Take for example “the prehistoric man” where discoveries were made of tools used, knowledge of fire depicted by drawings in caves, all without the understanding of science and its role in the physical world. As time passed the knowledge of Science and its role became real. Hence, we study the role of Science in Engineering.…
