Agua Grande Gunpowder Analysis

Agua Grande is an interesting art work created by Cai Guoqiang. It can be seen both as a performance art or a painting. The process of making the Agua Grande is beautiful and can be seen as performance art because it combined both artist’s movement and strong visual impact. Cai use gunpowder as the material to paint his art, he will set the gunpowder on the paper and covered the entire paper and gunpowder, he will reserve a fuse so he can then set the fire on and burn the gunpowder under the cover. The beauty of the performance is short but incredible, after hours of set up, the final art piece will be finished in a second after the gunpowder was been burned. The most interesting part of this art work is the desperate curios of the final piece brings up by the uncertainty of the firework, no one knows how the art will end up with before firing up the gunpowder and take the cover off.

In the photo Turner records a Waste treatment plant where tons of garbage remains there. The large quantity of small objects concentrate together and create a colorful image. The title of the work give audience an idea where we should heading to but the real thing that helps us associate garbage to stormy sea is the pattern at the left part of the image. At the left there are two parts that are different from the rest of colorfulness, one part is white and one part is black. The border between the white and black is really curvy which really helps to emphasize the sense of wave. I feel that the white part can be seen as the billowing waves and the black can be seen as the shadow under the wave and it gives me a sense of depth of the
