First, this related to AgriFund and Jim’s employer, Allen Sweatman. Ultimately, Jim had to be making this choice in the name of the company, as that is what he was trusted to do. Because of this, his loyalty should be with Allen. The two concerns relating to KiraFlour’s business, the E. coli in the flour and the selling of unlicensed products, should have immediately rang bells for Jim, as they could result in credit, litigation, and reputation losses for AgriFund. If the E. coli report is true, this could lead to KiraFlour shutting down, which means that they would no longer be able to repay AgriFund’s loan, posing risks for Allen and the rest of the company. If the their mission is well-intentioned, they should not have to encounter these problems if they are preventable. AgriFund likely can pull from a plethora of other healthy companies that are in dire need of a loan. Jim has to be objective and try to remove his emotional connection from the situation to realize that this money may work better elsewhere. In the end, AgriFund has to focus on their triple bottom line: financial, social, and environmental value. It may be easier to say yes and maintain his relationship with Baba, but Jim would feel great guilt if something went wrong later on.
