Why be Agnostic at a Catholic University?
December 9, 2015

Christianity which is founded on the monotheistic approach in solely believing in one desirable God, faces the views of many individuals who either believe, blatantly do not or agnostics who do not even consider the existence of a god to be a relative question. This agnostic approach involves neither approving nor disapproving of his existence, but rather considering Gods existence to be inherently unknowable which correlates with the Christian belief in the complexity of God as being so vast that he can never be fully comprehended by the cosmos. Why be an agnostic at a Catholic University? Religion should not be a barrier but an opportunity

As an agnostic this is one of the well qualified types of people to question and explore the religion more in depth than any true christian person. An Agnostic is an individual who accepts and considers that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or even the nature of God or of anything beyond material wonderment. A human being who state or assert neither faith nor disbelief in God. God. A figure of authority and hope. He is the “father, son, and holy spirit”. Someone seen as importance to a better way of life. The word God is a generic statement of a “divine deity”. Theology is the relationship between God and the world as we stated in class. Theological reflection is usually when a person uses a personal experience in relations to either faith and as well certain experiences can cause them to question because they are reacting by question with doubt of there being a God(Theological Foundations chapter 1). There is a relation between God and human race. No matter who or where you are in this world you have a relationship with God. An Agnostic, they do not come with a pre-anticipated bias on the topic. As this class is called ‘Perspectives on Christianity’ this tells us that they want people to open their minds and understand all forms of religion. Twenty thousand four hundred forty-eight students enrolled at St. John’s University yet each mind is different. “Catholics were in the dark about Pentecostal spirituality and missiology…Catholics and Pentecostals were diffident and wary of each other”(Catholic and Pentecostal Relations.). As we all know now that has changed and many Catholics and Christian now participate in this way of religion. The way you think is influenced by many aspects in your life. One big part of your mind is religion. “Pentecostalism is a movement of direct personal experience of God through the with the Holy Spirit”(Gunda). People would not understand all aspects of a true Catholic until you see the full picture from all sides and the outside. A lot of people commonly confuse Agnostics with Atheists. Atheism is not the same as being Agnostic. Atheism is not believing in any source of a higher being due to many different reasons. There are many different types of Atheism. There is scientific Atheism based on scientific method. Protest Atheism which pointing to evil and questioning why? Lastly humanistic Atheism there is only humanity so we do not need God. We just need ourselves. Who are the people of God? It is about being part of a community or family. It is how one is

An important idea from Pim Valkenbergs’ introduction in World Religions in Dialogue is giving an insider’s and outsider’s perspective on the major religions of the world. Incorporating both perspectives will help students gain a deeper knowledge about the main religions of the world. Developing this deeper knowledge will help readers view the religions with an open mind. When it comes to understanding this book, viewing both the outsider and insider viewpoints are very important and beneficial. In the book, students will start each chapter by reading about the outsider’s perspective, which is usually a Christian scholar.…

One morning I was sitting in my English class when my teacher handed us a piece by Jerome Stern called “What They Learn in School”. I’m not a big reader so I wasn’t too thrilled about reading Stern’s poem. However, I did become curious once I read the first line. Stern began his poem by stating how “In the schools now, they want them to know all about marijuana, crack, heroin, and amphetamines, because then they won 't be interested in marijuana, crack, heroin, and amphetamines.”…

What my husband's advancement to Chief Petty Officer means to me? The answer of that question could be 10 pages long or I could just resume what I feel in one word, "extremely proud", well I guess two words. I met Christian 16 years ago, he was full of energy, funny, and he had the ability to turn any sad or bad situation into a joke making everybody laugh; that is what make me fell in love with him. On the other hand, he was a little immature, unfocused when it comes to work, and nothing seemed to fulfill his expectations. I always knew that his passion was a career in the military, but that was out of question in my book!…

The religious landscape of the United States continually evolves as generations come and go. Without an established religion in the US, the freedom to practice what someone personally believes in is unabridged, therefore allowing the US to diversify. Religion is important in society for the reason that it is “a major force throughout the world that fuels policy and debate in government” (UC Davis). However, studies show that Americans are quite illiterate regarding religion: a majority of people answer less than half of the questions about core teachings, history, and influential figures of major world religions correctly (Liu). Lacking any background in religion corresponds to ignorance and intolerance as well, which at the school-age level can lead to bullying.…

According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, there are approximately 1.6 billion Christians, 1 billion Muslims, and roughly six million Jews. These are more than numbers, these represent real people who live and die each day. Granted, Christianity makes up a large portion of believers but it is quite common to come across those who hold different views. When that happens, Christians should respect the people and listen to what they believe to understand their religion and in turn share their Christian faith. However, Christians should reject the other religion, but still can become friends with non-Christians.…

Jesus Christ is the true God in human flesh. As stated in the beginning, everything was made in God’s image. Jesus proved to be the true image of God because of His actions and the way He lived His life until His death on the cross. As said in Colossians 1, Jesus is also stated to be the creator of all things. In the passage John 1, John states that “all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:1-3).…

Religion occurs where ever societies exist, from the Sumerians and the Ancient Egyptians right through to modern society religion is everywhere. This essay will look at religion from a sociological perspective and try to answer whether or not Britain is becoming a more secular society. When it comes to religion sociologists, unlike theologists and philosophers, are not as interested in the details of religions themselves, but in what effects religion has on its particular society. The sociological study or religion is separate from the philosophical approach, which is concerned with such questions as the nature and existence of God and the relationship between God and science (William Alston, 1967), in that it does not seek to answer whether or not there, is any validity to religious beliefs. Sociologist Peter L Berger (1967) coined the term ‘methodological atheism’ to describe the process needed in comparing the different beliefs of various religions.…

“To be Christian at all is to be a theologian, there are no exceptions” (Stone 3). Theology is the understanding of our God through a process of thinking about life in the light of faith. We use theology when engaging in our calling and when we turn for knowledge and support. How to Think Theologically, explains the difficult process of theological thinking and reflections. The author wants us to understand that if we practice religion and live according to our Christian faith, then we are practicing theology.…

A well-taught class is one that provides you with proper knowledge on the subject, while simultaneously putting the subject matter in the larger context of a shared history and current affairs. For centuries religion has been in conversation with almost every academic pursuit created by man. Naturally, the argument of how religion should be taught in schools is part of the argument on the best way for American students to be taught, as it should be. Currently, public schools, especially secondary schools, are merely ignoring religion altogether and have silently agreed to keep it largely outside of academic conversation. However, ignoring religion is a fruitless effort that negatively affects students.…
