The conceptual definition further highlighted aggression as feelings and actions that arise due to or in interaction with other people. Aggression from patients can have an effect on the care that the patient receives as it causes a breakdown in communication between the patient and the radiographer. When the patient first lashes out the radiographer may feel slightly angered but most likely shocked, which are completely natural emotions in this case. However it is important that they be able to take a step back and calm themselves down (Lipton and Marshal, 2012). Reacting straight away in a situation like this will only escalate it further and this will affect the patient 's view of care received. On the other hand the radiographer may try to calm the situation down.…

The incidence of aggression is more frequent in emergency departments (25%) and inpatient psychiatric hospitals (32.4%) ( Bowers 2011; NHS Protect 2013). The relationship between psychosis and violence is uncertain. Some evidence to suggest that individuals with a mental disorder/severe mental disorder is more likely to be violent than the general population (Fazel 2006; van Dorn 2012); however others argued that its the substance misuse, instead of mental health problem itself, increased the risk for violence (Elbogen 2009). The recent published guideline indicated that mental disorder is probably only a predictive factor of violence, but substance misuse is more likely related to the incidence of violence (NICE 2015). Swift containment of…

Often mental illness is a preexisting factor that is directly responsible for the examined criminal behaviors. It is very likely, based on clinical experience, that mentally ill patients frequently encounter barriers to treatment, and that this inadequate treatment of their disorders results in patients being arrested for both violent and nonviolent crimes. Often such charges are based on behaviors that are direct manifestations of the patients’ then untreated symptoms, such as paranoia leading to trespassing or grandiosity resulting in breaking and entering. Experience also suggests that victims of crimes by mentally ill individuals are often known to the patient, unlike nonpsychiatrically ill criminals who may or may not violate strangers.…
