Also, the way the topics expand past sports attracts viewers who want to know about domestic violence, racial issues or other topics beyond only sports. There is definitely exposure to topics and certain levels of importance placed on them (Johnson). This goes back to Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw’s theory that the goal is to understand the new media’s role in shaping public opinion (Carroll). The content, audience, and audience reception are all important factors (Jarvie 138). Jarvie wrote that media has a limited capacity for full, complete picture of sports. This is the cause of what is chosen to be featured and how it is presented (Jarvie 139). There are two known filters for sports media: general news and rules of presentation. “The logic of selection and presentation of sports coverage affects who and what gets on centre stage and for how long” (Jarvie 140). According to Jarvie, there are five visual effects used for television sports audiences. The change of image size, dramatic action, edited highlights, specific focus, and comparative statistical information as a part of their tactics (Jarvie 140-141). There is a task of democratizing the rules of sports media selection and presentation that is considered the biggest challenge that sports coverage will face in the future (Jarvie 141). These concepts can apply to ESPN and shows ran on this
