The client’s thoughts and feelings
It was observed that in the session, Gemma sounded stressed as she often sighed throughout her session before speaking.
However, as the session progressed, it sounded as though when Gemma further disclosed her experiences, she perhaps felt relief to be able to talk to someone about her experiences. According to Chenoweth and McAuliffe (2005), trust and building rapport in a relationship is fundamental, and I believe Gemma was able to disclose her story with me because she perhaps felt comfortable with the session and myself.
Gemma may have also felt relief to have disclose her experiences, which could attribute to her being repetitive and talking in long tangents. However, it is important to remember that

(350 words) The first issue that arose was that I had to deal with a distressed female client. She constantly checked her phone and asked for breaks during the interview. I implemented John Barkai’s principle that ‘the primary purpose of active listening is to build rapport with the client’ by listening intently to her description of the background of her case without interrupting her which in turn increased her confidence in my role as a legal assistant. When the solicitor entered the room and asked for further information about her case she repeatedly looked at me for reassurance.…

Brené Brown’s The Power of Vulnerability, a Ted Talk presented in June of 2010, is a very multifaceted presentation with many different layers of argumentation ripe for analysis. Brown uses her ethos to build rapport on her emotion-based subject. Her credibility relies on her Ph.D. in Social Work, the experiences working in the field she has, as well as her seemingly sage wisdom even she admits was hard to swallow all contribute to the audience’s understanding of her credibility. She creates an extremely convincing pathos through personal stories and experiences, such as admitting her own habits, quirks, and stories that only go to further her point on her ideas of shame, worth, and belonging. Brown continues to even utilize the power of logos…

I had the opportunity of being able to attend and observe The Serenity Seekers, an open Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) twelve step meeting. Upon arrival, I received a warm welcome by many different group members. They introduced themselves to me and one of the members even brought me pamphlets that provided me with information regarding what their A.A. program entailed. At first, I was apprehensive about going to an A.A. meeting; however, the members were all accepting of my presence, which made me feel comfortable. By accepting me, the members were displaying cohesiveness, the primary therapeutic factor allowing A.A. members to feel a sense of belonging, acceptance, and validation amongst the group.…

Collaborative Committee Meeting Observation It is necessary to mention that it takes a team spirit to run a health care organization. Therefore, it is imperative for all members of a committee, even if they are part of medical personnel, the management, or the representatives, to grasp the concept of shared governance and the proponents that compromise an efficient governance approach (Choi & Robertson, 2014). Furthermore, each healthcare organization work with interdisciplinary crews like the Infection Control Committee (ICC) and the Safety Committee to reduce employee and patient risk. Even though, the patients may not broadly know the existences of any of these committees. Fortunately, the ICC plays an essential component in every patient…

I attended a meeting with the Latino Medical student Association on the topic of DACA and how it can affect medical school hopefuls. My friend who is a member of the organization informed me about the meeting and with what was going on in the news regarding the future of DACA and its recipients I thought it would be important to go. l learned that they are very big on community and connecting their members with different opportunities as well as fostering a comfortable environment that allows their members to freely speak about important topics. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the experiences of students from different backgrounds that were all Dreamers. I'd be lying if I said I didn't get emotional hearing about the many times medical…

I know I need to work on showing more empathy and warmth with my clients if I want them to feel comfortable talking with me. In the previous chapter, it talks about the importance of the vocal tone of the therapist (Ivey et al., 2010, p. 130) which is something I could use to try and show I am actively involved in the conversation even if it becomes outwardly emotional such as in this case. In the future, I want to work on being more comfortable in this type of situation and remember that the client may also be uncomfortable crying or showing extreme emotion in front of me so I should be accommodating of…

Intervention Process: The interventions I wanted to concentrate on with Mr. Charlie would be implementing goals, working with him on the avoided situations, and working with him on his negative thoughts. The first intervention of identifying goals with Mr. Charlie, him and I were able to collaboratively identify these goals. By identifying these goals with Mr. Charles, I then was able to help him prioritize the goals. This, “process involves determining the most central issues that cause concern and arranging them from most important to least important” (Cully & Teten 2008 p. 32).…

Reflections of an AA Meeting Attendance by a Non-Alcoholic Support Meeting Reflection I attended an online Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. I had actually logged on early, as is my habit attending seminars, and observed the other participants chatting beforehand. I was surprised by the lack of seriousness surrounding this whole process.…

When the therapist validates the client's emotions and behavior, acting in this way when she felt scared because of the darkness, the client smiled and asked the therapist if she did well and the therapist reported that she did an awesome job. When the therapist asked the client about what she did during the weekend and what was the most joyful experience she had, the client reported that she spent time playing games on the new computer, as well as buying the first group of the dolls that she asked her mother to have them long time ago. The client reported that she feels happy as her aunt is pregnant and she would like to have a boy while the client would like her to have a girl. When the therapist asked the client about if she has any bad moment during the week, the client reported that she felt sad and scared 2-3 times a week because of the…

When my first consultation sent me their paper previous to the consultation, I was relieved. The chance to review a paper and have valid points of revision made the idea of talking with a stranger in an unfamiliar medium more than enough to settle my nerves and pushed me to go above and beyond on my revision notes. I had only gone through the paper once, riddling the margins with suggestions and circling spelling errors, or noting global issues on a separate page. When I had finished, the paper was lined with ink. In my mind, I had revised the paper to match how I would have written it: coherent thought patterns; detailed explanations with supporting detail; strong paragraph structure; and most importantly, a valid, well thought out argument.…

In counselling, relationships are very important. These relationships between the counsellor and the client are determined by the time and effort we put into developing and maintaining this relationship. In a way, a counsellor is a friend, but a friend who has the experience and the ability to apply different skills to assist people to solve their own problem instead of providing them with a solution. Self-evaluation is very useful to identify the strengths and weaknesses of these skills. The purpose of my self-evaluation is to reflect upon the used/unused skills which I applied by identifying areas where they have been used successfully and others that needs improvement.…

Client perception between the counsellor and client is also another crucial aspect in counselling. This can cause problems in counselling as the client has to aware of the counsellors unconditional positive regard and empathy towards them. If the client is unable to establish this unconditional positive regard and empathy being displayed by the counsellor then this may result in them being unwilling and reluctant in being fully honest and truthful with the counsellor and thus hinder both the communication and the therapeutic alliance between them (Rogers, 1957;…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…
