Age Of The Universe Essay

Improved Essays
- Have you ever thought about visiting the universe? Or have over viewed it? It is amazing how scientists are able to make discoveries about the universe. Incredibly, scientists have invented special instruments that can tell wether an object is moving away from Earth or towards it, and they also made many other such instruments. Yet, there are many questions an average person would ask such as, How was the universe formed, how old is the universe, and will the universe expand forever?
The universe is a huge wide open space that holds everything from the smallest particle to the biggest galaxy. Isn't that crazy? For the question many that many were asking, scientifically, about 13.7 billion years ago, a powerful explosion happened called

Since the universe was formed 13.7 billion years ago, how old do you think the universe is? How did scientists determine how many candles to put on the universe's birthday cake? They can determine the age of the universe using two different methods: by studying the oldest objects within the universe and measuring how fast it is expanding. Experts agree that the universe cannot be younger than the objects contained inside of it. By determining the ages of the oldest stars, scientists are able to put a age limit on the universe which is 13.7 billion years old.

A forever expanding universe? The expansion of the universe depends on how much matter the universe contains. Scientists predict that if there is enough mater, gravity could eventually stop the expansion of the universe. If the universe stops expanding, it could start collapsing to its original state. This process would be a reverse of what might have happened during the big bang. However, scientists now think that there may not be enough matter in the universe, so the universe will continue to expand forever. Therefore, stars will age and die, and the universe becomes cold and dark after many billion of years. Even after the universe becomes cold and dark, it will continue to expand

In a day to day situation, if we want to find how much time does it take a person to go from Point A to Point B, we can use the equation T= D/V. In this equation, D represents the distances in meters between Point A and Point B, and V represents the speed (meter/ second) of how fast a person walks. In mathematical terms, it uses the total distance traveled to divided by the time to get an estimation of the average speed(second). But, if we want to find out the age of the universe ? Then, we need to take it into the universe’s perspective.…

7 years ago, a friend and I were in a science class, when the teacher asked us how old the earth was. Replying with the truth, I answered “6 to 7 thousand years”. When the teacher told me I was wrong, I was confused. And when I debated his answer of 12 billion or so years, I was scolded.…

This episode of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, Neil deGrasse states that “this adventure is made possible by generations of searches strictly adhering to a simple set of rules: test ideas by experiment and observation, build on those ideas that pass the test, reject the ones that fail, follow the evidence and see where it leads, and question everything. “ The universe is 13.8 billion years old. Earth’s closest neighbor is the moon, it has no sky, no ocean, or life. Mars has as much land as Earth itself. This past Thursday we were placed into groups and asked to read Alan Lightman’s essay What Came Before the Big Bang. The Big Bang happened some fourteen billion years ago as a state of infinitesimally dense and small, superheated ball of matter, which has been expanding ever since. And as far as we know, the universe will keep expanding forever. What scientists are trying to figure out is if there was anything before the Big Bang, essentially, they are trying to figure out if time had existed before the creation of the Big Bang.…

Astronomy is an ongoing process. It is always changing and improving as we discover new stellar objects and use more advanced technology. For example, people once believed that the Earth was flat, and the sun and other planets orbited around us. As we advanced in technology, we proved both of these ideas to be false. Even today there is still work to be done, ideas and theories to confirm and disprove, and plenty of other things to explore.…

Have you ever looked into the night sky and wondered, what beauty lies just beyond the reach of the naked eye? There is so much beauty out there to be seen, not with the naked eye but, rather with the use of a powerful telescope. Most people do not have the chance or opportunity to experience and view the stars and planets that surround us. The universe that surrounds us is one of God’s most brilliant and beautiful creations, and the history and science that is out there is just waiting to be studied. The Stars have been an important aspect to humans since before writing.…

It’s amazing how the same stars we look at today are the same ones, more or less, that all humanity has gazed upon. Plato, Queen Mary, Martin Luther King—the list is endless but these great historical figures have all seen the balls of light and gas that shine in the sky tonight. That’s all they are, floating matter in a vast, unknown space we call “outer space” simply because it resides outside the front door. Space. It envelopes us like an old, soft blanket with moth bites here and stains there.…

Young Earth Creationism is a theory that states that the universe, including Earth, is 6000-12000 years old and was created in six literal days (Mortenson, 2011). One of the main arguments for this theory is that there are many naturally occurring phenomena in the universe which show that YEC is the only viable theory. This argument was proposed by Dr. Russell Humphreys, an expert in YEC. One of these phenomena includes the spiral shape of the known galaxies. Humphreys suggests that the spiral shape of the galaxies are indicative of the age of the universe because the speed of the rotation of the stars in a galaxy is so high that if the universe was billions of years old then the galaxies wouldn’t maintain that shape (Humphreys, 2005).…

In this essay, I will discuss, compare and contrast the viewpoints of the Nebular Hypothesis vs. the six-day creation from the Old-Earth Secular View and Young-Earth Secular View. The Young Earth creationist believes that the Earth was created in the six-day creation and the old earth creationist believes that the Earth was created billions of years ago during the time of evolution of the Solar System. It’s really all about what one believes. Old-Earth Secular View…

Primarily, the idea of infinity is caused by the limitations of the human mind. Furthermore, infinity only has meaning under the branch of mathematics. Our human capacities are not strong enough to ponder greater possibilities of the universe and because of this limitation we have identified this concept of infinity to solve the cosmological dilemma. A self-caused deity, with the necessary powers can exist outside of this infinite series and thus be the creator of the infinite series…

This matter expanded and started to cool down, going through various transitional stages and has continued to expand ever since the explosion. The first scientist to come up with the idea of a 'Big Bang' was the astrophysicist Friedrich Franz Friedmann who used relativity field equations to prove that the universe is expanding. The Big Bang Theory is an effort to explain what occurred before, during and after the universe was supposedly created and how and why scientists believe in the logic known as the ‘Big Bang’. Although there is no scientific evidence of what there was before the universe many scientists believe that before the so called explosion of the singularity, nothing existed, not space, time, matter, or energy nothing and in fact there was not an explosion of this singularity but an inflation like a balloon, scientists such as Steven Hawking, George Ellis, and Roger Penrose believed this to be true. The theory expresses that scientists are unaware of where, how and why this singularity appeared and are only really aware of what happened when it did appear and what was inside it that contributed to how the universe is in the present day.…
