Personally, I think if a juvenile is not old enough to vote or move out of their family’s homes, then they should not be held accountable as an adult. There are many different opinions on the age of responsibility and adulthood. In Alan Greenblatts article, “What is the Age of Responsibility?”, he discusses how people often think 18 is too young to be considered an adult but yet there are many contradictions against the claim. With so many factos influencing what people think maturaity means, people should be considered adults at 18 because that is when teens start experiencing adult things and start making real life decisons. The age of maturity should be measured not by age but by the persons life experiences. Robert Epstein, a psychologist, completed a study with, “... More than 30,000 people showing that 30% of American teens are more competent than the median adults in a variety of ways”.…

The age of criminal responsibility (ACR) appears to have different meanings across European countries, however it may generally be understood as the age a ‘child is considered capable of committing a crime and old enough to stand trial and be convicted of a criminal offence ‘(NSPCC.2016). The age of criminal responsibility in England and Wales is 10, whilst in Italy it is 14, meaning in England and Wales, a child can be charged for committing a criminal offence aged 10, however in Italy, a 10 year old would not be charged. Furthermore, the ways in which the youth justice systems function in both countries are very distinctive. The majority of European countries, including Italy, see children committing crimes as a welfare matter, whilst the English system ‘is engineered to primarily respond through punishment’ (Howard League, 2008.p.2). Alongside a lower ACR in England and Wales (EW), the youth justice system takes a more…
