Age Of Responsibility In America

Improved Essays
Responsibility is a concept with which everyone is familiar. We have had to be responsible for something since we were toddlers. The amount and severity of things we had responsibility over has increased as we got older. Therefore, is it reasonable to set an age for when people should start to be responsible? That is the controversial topic at hand. It is understandable that we must have laws and regulations to be“safe.” Whether that be setting an age for drinking, driving, voting etc. However, the government appears to have set these age marks in an arbitrary manner. There are many arguments supporting why the current laws regarding the age of responsibility are fine as are. However, the current system in place for determining the legal age of responsibility in America is outdated; the age of adulthood in our country should be determined by the ability of a person to prove that they are mature by paying bills, holding a job or attending college instead of by arbitrary laws and set numbers.
The laws regarding the age of responsibility must be changed in order to stop restricting our youth. There are many teenagers completely capable of taking care of themselves or simply having some more freedom. It is

This means that changing the law to where it is required to prove one’s capability will result in stopping those “adults” who are still immature from being reckless and therefore abusing their lawful rights or privileges. An example of an adult who abuses their right would be those adults who drive carelessly, or can’t hold a job. As Kate Simmonds explained “... I know a lot of high schoolers and college students that are more mature than some adults I know” (“I’m 17”), we all know one of those adults. Granted that those adults only make up a small amount of the country’s adults, however, those reckless adults still

What is the true age of responsibility? This question is addressed by Alan Greenblatt in his article “The Age of Responsibility”(2009), where as a political author he suggests that the age requirement system is outdated. He does this by giving various facts on informative statements on laws regarding age. Through Greenblatt's persuasive statements he supports my argument that there are some restrictions which I do agree need to be changed, but there is still few that are fine the way they. The Government age requirement laws of rental car restrictions are set at a too high of age, however the government does a good job setting the drinking age at twenty one.…

However, by the time an adolescence reaches about 16, they should fully understand their actions. Personally, I think if a juvenile is not old enough to vote or move out of their family’s homes, then they should not be held accountable as an adult. How can the state say they are not legally an adult by law, but hold them accountable as an adult in courts eye. Therefore, I think a child should be held completely accountable for their actions after they turn 18, prior to that they should…

Setting the drinking age to 18 will make 18 year olds feel more comfortable and responsible drinking without having the thought that they are doing something wrong. McCardell, a former president of Middlebury College, says the problem is, “... That underage kids don’t actually consider themselves underage”. (Greenblatt, 13) 18 is the age where people start taking things more responsibly and having to go behind the law to drink, when they can make authoritive decisions, does not help them to be more comfortable. One may defend that 18 is not a good age to start drinking because they will not be responsible with it. “The people who are advocating going down to 18 should ackowledge that they’re willing to risk an extra thousands death per year and double that number of injuries”.…

However, as recent statistics are reaching all time highs, it is only reasonable to consider reducing the drinking age to 18. Lowering the drinking age and normalizing the drinking culture in the United States would reduce alcohol related deaths, and create a more responsible drinking mindset. The government believes that 18 year olds are mature enough to handle many important life decisions such as being able to vote, own a gun, joining the military, or becoming a legal guardian. It is time for the United States government to expand their trust and allow 18 year olds to show that the right to consume alcohol is another responsibility that they are mature enough to…

Imagine being an adult eighteen-year-old that just moved from Puerto Rico, where the age of drinking alcohol was eighteen. As you can imagine, after moving to the United States, he was very confused because now he could no longer have access to alcohol. Many people think that the drinking age of 21 should be lowered to eighteen. Others oppose that idea and think that humans are not of the right maturity to consume alcohol within a reasonable manner. When you reach the age of eighteen, you are now considered an adult in the United States, and adults should have the right to make their own decisions about anything and especially about alcohol consumption.…

Rather than limiting alcohol sales to people over the age of twenty one, we should be teaching people how to safely consume it. The fact that a person can buy lottery tickets, join the military, sign contracts, and own a house at the age of eighteen but can’t consume alcohol is mind blowing. At the age of eighteen is when one becomes a legal adult with actual responsibility, so why not give them the power to responsibly…

Research shows that brain development continues well into a person’s twenties. Alcohol can affect this development, and contribute to a range of problems. About 4,358 people under the age of twenty one die each year from alcohol related incidents. Drinking can also cause people to make poor decisions and very risky behavior. Drinking before the brain (the temporal lobe) is fully developed affects the judgement making process, I believe that the national drinking age needs to be raised from twenty one to twenty five; however the drinking age shouldn’t legally stay at twenty one.…

In the U.S, at the age of 18, one can legally vote, buy cigarettes, and join the army, to cite a few things. Going against the law, critics recommend allowing 18-year-olds to drink, and consider their age to have the rights and same power as 21-year-olds. If an 18 years old is allowed to sign a lease, join the military, vote, and buy cigarettes. At the same agreement an 18-year- olds should be…

For example, as mentioned before, in the state of California a person is considered an adult once they turn 18, but not everyone who turns 18 is mature or prepared to make wise choices. However, if a person was considered an adult at the age of 21, it would be understandable because many people at the age of 21 are more likely to be mature. A person should be considered an adult at the age of 21 because by that age they are wiser, have less peer pressure, and are more responsible, on the other hand, someone people, despite their age, are responsible.…

The right to drink should have a higher age of initiation because of the dangers posed by drinking. Many rights in the US are conferred on citizens at age 21 or older. A person cannot legally purchase a handgun, gamble in a casino (in most states), or adopt a child until age 21, rent a car (for most companies) at age 25, or run for President until age 35. Drinking should be similarly restricted due to the responsibility required to self and…
