Age Of Adulthood In The United States

Improved Essays
In the United States of America, laws about maturity and adult activities vary from 18 years for the age of consent and the ability to vote and buy cigarettes to the age of 21 for gambling, drinking, and the ability to wed. Though in the United States there is no single age where someone becomes an adult, the topic of the age of adulthood is often argued. From a neurological standpoint the logical age of adulthood is 25 as that is the age the prefrontal regions which are important for planning ahead, anticipating future consequences of decisions, controlling impulses, and comparing risk and reward fully develop.
Influences like alcohol and cigarette use which is legal at the age of 21 in the United States are potentially harmful to a still-developing

In the article “What is the Age of Responsibility?” written by Alan Greenblatt is about the issue of maturity and what the age should be the mark of responsibility but maturity comes not with age but when someone is responsible. Some people mature earlier than others. It’s when people have to make augmentations to their life in order to function well in the real world. The age of underage drinking should be lowered to eighteen years of age in order to combat the social drinking normality of recklessness and alcohol abuse. This may change the perspective of young people from a sinful, pleasureful activity to one that is casual and laid-back. Using the information gathered, by lowering the law to eighteen years the stigma can be less present throughout the most susceptible group. Any alcohol abuse younger than eighteen may be detrimental to the child’s growth. The brain is still developing at younger ages and may cause damage to itself as well as neurocognitive deficits and other physical symptoms (Zeigler et al., 2005)…

The human brain is not fully developed until a person is in their early twenties. Setting the drinking age at twenty-five would make sure that the brain is fully developed before alcohol is introduced to the body. Alcohol can alter the addictive part of the human brain. It is easier for younger people whose brain is not fully developed to get addicted to alcohol than it is for someone with a brain that is fully developed. Advertisements for alcoholic beverages are directed more towards the younger crowd of people.…

Have you ever taken a moment thought about why the legal drinking age for most states in the United States is twenty one? In the United States when an individual reaches the age of 18 they are considered an adult in the eyes of the law. Being an adult in the eyes of the law means an individual is mature enough to vote, buy cigarettes, sign up for the Army, and if a crime is committed you will be charged as an adult. The law says an 18 year old is mature enough to make life-alternating choices, but not responsible enough to drink alcohol? If the drinking age were lowered to 18 then there would be less accidents brought on by alcohol, fewer criminal acts and the introduction of alcohol at an early age will prote for more responsible adults.…

Adolescence is the important transition period from a little dependent kid to an independent adult. Many people believe that teenager’s brain only grow bigger in this period, however, the teenager’s brain is neither an “older” little kid’s brain, nor a half mature adult brain (Giedd, 2008). In fact, a teenager’s brain is developing at one of the most complex stages in their lifetime. The period of puberty also is defined as the most troublesome time. When people talk about teenagers, they always connect them with words like adventure, trouble-maker, aggressiveness, self-centeredness, or radicalness, etc.…

Research shows that brain development continues well into a person’s twenties. Alcohol can affect this development, and contribute to a range of problems. About 4,358 people under the age of twenty one die each year from alcohol related incidents. Drinking can also cause people to make poor decisions and very risky behavior. Drinking before the brain (the temporal lobe) is fully developed affects the judgement making process, I believe that the national drinking age needs to be raised from twenty one to twenty five; however the drinking age shouldn’t legally stay at twenty one.…

For example, research shows that alcohol-related damage to the brain may be greater in the developing brains of teens, and some of the areas majorly affected are the learning and memory area (Degutis, 2008). However, many teens are still in high school at the age of eighteen and are supposed to be learning constantly. With the effects and damage alcohol can inflict on the body, it is more logical to have the drinking age higher than eighteen because teens still have much to learn in common sense at that time as well. It is proven that the human brain does not stop developing until age twenty-five (“Raising the drinking”, 2015). Drinking slows, stops, and hinders cognitive development of the teen’s brain they may later in life lack what others have due to alcohol.…

In the article written by Julie Beck entitled “When Are You Really an Adult?” she uses a series of true life accounts to attempt to define when a person becomes an adult and what defines adulthood. She begins with the real life example of Henry David Thoreau and catches the attention of the reader by leading them down the path that she is talking about a current day young man. However, when she reveals she is talking of a young man of years past it is obvious that many different generations struggle with the definition and thought of being an adult. Beck makes it clear that what defines being an adult is not clear, there is no black and white answer. There are many factors leading to whether a person feels they have become an adult.…

Juveniles should not be tried as adults for it is wrong to hold adolescents, under the legal age, to adult standards. If children do not even receive the same rights as adults in the first place, it makes no sense to try them in adult court. These juveniles should have the opportunity to be rehabilitated in a positive manner, for they tend to come from troubled households and violent neighborhoods. In over half of the cases these troubled kids don’t know any different way than a life of crime when surrounded by both social and environmental factors that influence their delinquent actions. One must commemorate that juveniles are mentally underdeveloped, and still have time to innovate if their issues are dealt with precisely and accurately.…
