They are looking for alternative lifestyle solutions that will allow them to live independently, optimize their physical functioning and improve their quality of life. Studies have shown that nearly 89 percent of those over age 60 want to remain in their home and that it is the most affordable option (Henley, 2016). Since most modern homes were designed for those who are ambulatory and can navigate steps, a decline in the person’s ability to walk or increase in pain could render a good portion of the house inaccessible (Henley, 2016). As a result of this issue, the author made three suggestions for addressing this concern. First declutter the home, sell what you can, then envision what positive changes can be made to the space. Second redesign the first floor to create a master bedroom. Finally prepare the upstairs for a roommate. These changes will make it easier for a person to AIP and create income in the process.
