A number does not define a person. A page full of filled-in bubbles does not distinguish them from anyone else. Their long essay response does not make them more superior than the rest. Standardized testing has put labels on everyone who has taken the exams. The results from the tests are merely a number and a number does not say anything about a student. The number does not reflect their personality; how they think, how they learn. The number is simply a score of how well children are at filling in bubbles. Yet this number is thought to be so important by schools. Students should not be labeled by a score off of a test. Overall, high-stakes testing needs more time to develop and needs to be further inspected before important decisions are made concerning the exams.
Even though not everyone experiences the same amount of stress and anxiety, many students, teachers, and school districts feel pressured when it comes to high-stakes standardized testing. Since it is very important to receive good scores on the testing, teachers are putting a lot of demand on the students to perform highly. In return, students become stressed when test taking time rolls around. A survey was conducted in many schools throughout the United States which measured where the stress related to standardized testing is coming from. Nearly all the results indicated teachers put the largest amount of pressure on students (Spector 12). This survey proves that the test itself should not be held accountable for student’s stress. Since teachers are held responsible for making sure the children do well, they are the ones who are causing extra stress and anxiety among the student body. Along with students, teachers are familiar with the stakes riding along with state required exams. Teachers
