The Fight Against Palm Oil
"Today, palm oil is grown throughout Africa, Asia, North America, and South America, with 85% of all palm oil globally produced and exported from Indonesia and Malaysia; but most of the time not using sustainable measures" (King 1). Palm oil is a very popular oil that comes from the Palm Tree in many rainforests. The production of palm oil affects many parts in the world from Global Warming to the murder of the Orangutans in the rain forest. "Demand is still growing, as are oil palm plantations but at what price to tropical forests and the biodiversity found there?" (Cesareo 3). The use and production of Palm Oil has enough irregularities that it should be protested and the people using do need to be punished. Fun fact;: calling for a boycott can actually be counter-productive! "If you do not demand CSPO (Certified Sustainable Palm Oil), then the buyers won 't buy it and the growers won 't grow it" (Starbuck 1). Palm Oil Companies won 't go out of business; they will just revert or stick with the cheaper unsustainable practices, because no one is paying them for them to have this better product. Producers just go with what sells and if you don 't buy it someone else will. They will just sell all their palm oil to the big markets like China, India and emerging markets in Russia and Japan. It will not mean less deforestation on the ground but it will most likely mean more deforestation on the ground (especially if they switch to another oilseed like soya which requires up to 10 times as much land to produce the same amount of oil!). "If somehow a boycott really did start to take hold (and for this you would need millions of people boycotting, not a few thousand), this may drive the price of palm oil down. If that happens, then the biofuels industry would really start to see palm oil as an affordable feedstock for fuel.
