Childhood hunger is a big problem in America. Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics encouraged pediatricians to ask all of their patients if they ever go hungry. The pediatricians should ask their patients two questions: “In the last year have you worried about your food running out before you had enough money to pay for more?” and “Did the groceries that you bought last until you had enough money to pay for more?” If patients say yes to those questions, pediatricians are told to point out local food banks and many organizations that could support those families in need. Not many doctors research and pay attention to childhood hunger, even though consuming nutritious food is very important for a child’s health to grow and function correctly. Also, without nutritious food to eat, kids are more likely to get sick and have more health issues and mental and emotional issues.

There are sixteen million kids that are fighting hunger in America, and so much of the focus is on how to fight hunger in other countries like Africa. Hunger needs more focus from the people in America and we can help fight it by having fundraisers. You could have a can food drive, have a bake to raise money, have a car wash, or donate to the Henrico Christmas Mother.
