Dragons, fairies, castles and kings, all come with being an imaginative child, but when as they grow older, do they truly become adults? In the future as almost all kids grow up, they face challenges and hardships that they have to overcome and it is these things that change them from kids to adults. Making them much stronger, not just as individuals, but as a species. A kid should not be considered an adult just by the age of eighteen, but instead they must also be considered adults when they have matured enough to fit into the older adult groups.

Age is one of the main things that people look at when judging young adults because it defines when they are allowed to step into society. When teenagers turn 18 in the U.S they officially become adults because it is the age that they gain their rights as the working members of society. “Age 18 is the official age that a person becomes an adult and it is the age that you should start acting like it.” (F.D Harald Page # 50) It is good for others to know that eighteen is the age of adulthood because it lets kids and adults prepare for it better. In a way this proves my claim because it shows that age does matter in the eyes of society, but it also shows that it is not the only thing they look at.

A person only truly becomes an adult when they become mature enough to act like one. “Most people think that becoming an adult is all about age, but in all actuality it is their level of maturity that maters” (S.P Jester page # 3) This quote is a good example of the importance of maturity because it explains that physical age is not as important as mental age. Becoming an adult is not just about age, it's about a person's level of maturity and their ability to handle the world around them, although I believe this to be true, some do

Many parents of today's teenagers were legally allowed to drink at the age of eighteen. Today's teenagers face more responsibility and are treated much differently from the way their parents were treated. If twenty-one is considered so mature, then why is eighteen considered an adult? At the age of eighteen, an individual can vote, serve on a jury, stay out without a curfew, leave home, drive, smoke, buy weapons, engage in financial contracts, fornicate, start a family, be sent to adult prison, join the army, and die for this country. If an eighteen year-old can be held to so many responsibilities, then it seems unfair to say that they are not old enough to drink.…

Others may believe that the age should be lower than 18, such as 16 since teens can get their license at that age. Some parents just want their kids to get out of the house and have responsibility for themselves, but not all teens can handle this. In the article written by Julie Beck entitled “When Are You Really an Adult?” she uses a series of true life accounts to attempt to define when a person becomes an adult and what defines adulthood. She begins with the real life example of Henry David Thoreau and catches the attention of the reader by leading them down the path that she is talking about a current day young man. However, when she reveals she is talking of a young man of years past it is obvious that many different generations struggle with the definition and thought of being an adult. Beck makes it clear that what defines being an adult is not clear, there is no black and white answer. There are many factors leading to whether a person feels they have become an adult.…
