While some professors meet the issue of a phone with opposition as it can be distracting, which is not arguable, they can completely take one out of a lecture and into something entirely different and distant. None of these professors, however, treat the phone like a high school handbook drafted and published in the 70’s. As these phones get bigger, they get clumsier. A fall from the pocket is not uncommon, especially when wearing gym shorts or the tiny pockets in all of women’s pants. What’s horrible is that a fall that is almost entirely out of one’s control could instantly land them in a solid four-hour detention that took place on Wednesdays. This form of punishment was lazily implemented, harsh, and a complete waste of time. It had kids taken out of extracurricular activities, soccer and football games, and most importantly four hours of their lives they can’t get back. Just before getting out of high school, students are under eighteen or have just turned it. Being a minor makes it a tough situation for one to not be controlled and constantly pushed into the direction an institution wants everyone to be in. The biggest reason for many cases of “senioritis” is that yearn for individuality that can only be cured by getting out of those tightly bound confines. As we age, life can tend to get exponentially busier, and it is bad habit to strip away students of putting a device to good use that enables them to manage their life. These schools already go heavy on cell service-blocking walls and technology, what’s the harm in letting students jot down an important date to their calendars at the moment it is announced if they can’t even receive a text? These assignments should be inputted immediately so they are not forgotten later in the midst of many other events and important assignments cropping throughout the day. Instead they push paperback agendas that, while far more tangible, lack the ability to buzz the user to do something; they must first remember to even check the
