One resource that the after-school will need is before conducting an evaluation is an external evaluator. Currently, staff members don’t have the skill required to conduct a program evaluation. One recommendation would be partnering with a university where graduate students can assist with data collection and analysis. In New York City three institutions specialize in Measurement, Evaluation, and Statistics: Teacher College at Columbia University, Baruch College: School of Public Affairs, and NYU Steinhardt. The first step will be contacting department chairs and professors to see if they are interested in developing a partnership. As public demand and a need for after-school have grown, so too has the demand for accountability. Fortunately for after-school advocates, a steady stream of afterschool evaluations is showing important gains for children. Also, researchers have found that after-school programs encourage increased parental involvement, an important building block for student success. Some different types of evaluations have been conducted over the last several years, assessing various aspects of after-school programming. Some assessments seek to gather data on whether programs have been structured as they were originally intended and others explore student outcomes. The data and conclusions from these studies collected by the After-School Alliance suggest that quality after-school programs have a positive impact on some measures of student academic achievement, positively affecting behavior and discipline and helping relieve parents’ worries about their children’s
