Due to poverty, many children are forced to work to help support their family. I learned in chapter nine that their childhoods are marked with hunger, life-threatening illnesses, and a limited future. My childhood was one of having three meals each day, wide possibilities, and access to medicine. Children in the United States go to school, but in many other countries, children only attend school for about eight years. I was taken aback to learn that if I was a child in a low-income nation the likelihood of finishing high school would be very low. The World on Fire video highlighted this difference and showed that at the core it is due to a lack of access to educational material and affordability. In the United States, women are allowed to vote, own property, obtain a divorce, and live independently. Many people still think gender inequality is a problem in areas such as the wage gap, sexual abuse, and the low number of women in the world of business. These are problems in our country today, but in other countries they are much worse. In many low-income nations, women are uneducated, dependent on their spouse or family, not able to own property, and many of their lives are controlled by their culture’s traditions on how they should behave. The World on Fire video showed a single mother selling oranges to send her son to school. This shows that many women are at a greater risk of being impoverished than men because of the restraints placed on their lives. Personally, I was shocked to find that many women are victims of slavery in countries that have abolished it. I also was horrified to find that rape crimes are a normal part of their lives. I knew before that human trafficking was a major issue, but I never realized that there are other forms of slavery just as severe. My experiences with this global perspective have fit with the overall concept. I am given the ability and freedom to live independently and choose my path, while many women are facing danger every day of their lives.
