After the fire, Green’s life was a mess, she didn’t care for the garden, one of the only places where she felt like she could be who she was, and then she even let the looters destroy it. Then, she started to transform herself into a whole other person, a person with tattoos covering her body, a person with clothes covered by thorns, a person who was fearful of herself. She wanted to look so scary, so fearful, that nobody would ever disrespect her again. That was until love found her, it was love that healed her from her wounds, it was love that liberated her from her sorrow, and it was love that conquered the fear that resided in her. One of the main ways Alice Hoffman used to demonstrate the theme was by using the plot of the story. One of the main pieces of plot that supported this theme was when Ash found a wounded dog, a dog who hid in the shadows, like a ghost. Almost immediately, Ash knew there was something different about the dog, something it was missing, something she was missing too. She decided to name him what he was, a ghost. That day, she let the dog follow her home, and I bet she glad she did. One of which, is the ice needle mentioned near the end of the book. This is because it symbolised the love between Ash and Diamond. What happened was, Ash was tattooing herself with the “ice needle” because it hurt the most, and that Ash had already gone through so much pain that she did not fear the pain. What was one of the most important parts was when Diamond walked through the door halfway through Ash’s tattoo, this meant that Ash only had drew only half a heart. So without the need of words, Ash gave Diamond the missing half so they could share their love eternally through all the fear that might come across
