After The Bath Woman Drying Herself By Edgar Degas

The elements of design are visual components that artist use to make their artwork. There are six primary elements of design and they include line, shape, mass/volume, perspective, texture and color. We use these elements of design to add more depth to our analysis of artwork.
All of these elements can be seen in the painting After the Bath, Woman drying herself by Edgar Degas. The main lines in this piece are the vertical and diagonal lines where the floor and wall meet in the background. The woman seen in the picture also has a defined contour that looks slightly blurry, this is likely to show her movement as she is drying herself. The colors used in this work are pastels. Overall the majority of this painting is very dark and uses warm tones. The background in this work is much darker than the woman which helps show that she if the focal point of the piece because she is where your eye is drawn. The pastels used in this painting were very built up so the brush strokes are very clear here, which would give the painting a rougher feeling texture.

I chose this image because it’s always been one of my favorites and it’s something that nearly all of us know about. To start off the first thing you notice is the scale. She is the largest item in the painting and she is right up front which immediately lets you know she is the focal point and what is important in this piece. Next is unity, the soft edges of her figure are very similar to the soft tone you see in the background of the painting. The similarity between the two helps unify the image (Sachant, pg. 63). Lastly there is balance. At first look the image looked very symmetrical to me, but if you draw a line directly down the center of the work instead of being split down the middle you see that she is pushed to the left a little
