Contributing to my community has been something that has interested me, and something I've enjoyed since I was a kid. Most of my community service work has been high school, where I found opportunities to help more easily accessible. And not just community service projects, but clubs that helped me and other participating educated others who were not as knowledgeable on black culture or experience, get a view into our lives, while also creating bonds and relationships.

Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

At a young age, I was taught to do things for the greater good, my family has always given back whether it is donating food and clothes or adopting a family for Christmas. Growing up I have received assistance because at times my mother and I needed help so I personally know how much of an impact a small act of kindness can have and that is why I decided to join the Bakersfield Police Explorer program, which is community service based volunteer work. Getting into this program required various steps such as entrance testing, background check, and an interview. I wanted to be apart of this program as a way to test the waters of a career in law enforcement, helping out in the community, and to develop as a person.…

In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…

I'm very passionate about this program because I love how much it helps out all the struggling kids and families. It gives the kids a safe place to learn and have fun, and it was amazing to see how excited some the kids got to see me.…

This may be attributed to watching my grandmother receive medical care frequently for both type I diabetes and kidney failure. As medical treatment become more available in our community my grandma was able to receive the care she needed without having to travel fifty miles or more. From a young age, I saw the need for more medical care in underserved communities.…

Unit Life: I like my unit a lot. We get along very well without much effort; however, we aren't as close as we could (or maybe should) be. I know that I contribute to that just as much as anyone else does, and that people find myself and the things that I do just as weird and annoying as I find the things that they do weird and annoying. We don’t do many activities together except for required things: church, worship nights, learning components, family dinners etc. This is something that I think should change soon, that we spend more time together, whether that is watching movies together, going skiing, or playing board games.…
