During the Civil War the African Americans role was to go with their masters to war and help them when they are in need medical attention. In some cases, the slaves oversaw their master’s personal affects if he was killed and then they would return them to his family. At the middle of the war in 1863, when more Confederate soldiers were needed, state militias of free black men were offered to go to the Confederate war office but refused. On March 13, 1865, the legislation was passed that all free black slaves if they enlisted in the Confederate Army, even though they were property of their masters.
