The media treats white people differently than African-Americans and Haitian Americans in the event of a natural disaster. The Washington Post conducted an experiment where they asked participants to decide how much money should be awarded to victims of Hurricane Katrina. They were able to view photographs of victims of the hurricane and read narratives of victims looting businesses for food to survive. The text states, “In the throes of the civil rights movement in the United States, many states made looting a crime. Almost all of these states were southern states that had a history of criminalizing behavior that they associated more with African-Americans than with Whites” (Charles 245). This shows how African-Americans have been stereotyped even in history.
