After all of this fear and hatred that was faced for centuries by African-Americans, change needed to happen and the creation of the Black Lives Matter movement was created to do so. KEY EVENTS…
After reading Divided by Race, United by Pain. I have so many strong thoughts and feelings about what happen in these three states. First I will like to say I am disappointed in my black community. When it comes to protesting about police brutality it should not be done in a negative way. There is no need to riot with guns, bats and other weapons.…
In modern day, even with this organization still fighting for equality, a more popular movement would be the Black Lives Matter movement, corroborating the idea of racial prejudice continuing in today’s society as people still feel the need to…
The point behind social movements is to inform the society of a situation and use each other’s support to aim towards a common goal of putting an end to whatever the issue is. Three women who had hopes of a common goal, unity for all, established Black Lives Matter in 2013. Rickford states (2015), “Black Lives Matter has evolved into a potent alternative to the political paralysis and isolation that racial justice proponents have faced since the election of Obama (p. 2). This is the basic idea behind the movement and issue our society is being faced with. For several years now, African Americans have been faced with unfair challenges simply because of the color of their skin.…
The civil rights movement has been around for many years, it first started in the 1950s. According to history the african american civil rights movement only lasted from 1954 to 1968 because the civil rights act was passed in 1968 making it illegal to discriminate concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, and national origin. It also made it a federal crime to "by force or by threat of force, injure, intimidate, or interfere with anyone…by reason of their race, color, religion, or national origin". But the truth it that to this day there's still many many people fighting for their civil right. But it is not just african americans that are still fighting for their rights.…
And even though the #Blacklivesmatter movement was created after the death of Trayvon Martin, we are still seeing black bodies fall and red blood spattered. And the #Blacklivesmatter movement has only proved to provoke and scare the people in which we want to assure and embrace as fellow civilized, peaceful, human beings. This movement to me is one of the things holding the African-American society back. It has stunted our progress. I see that our people are being unfairly killed.…
The United States of America has come such a long way from the racist acts towards African Americans. From the Voting Rights Act of 1965, to having an African American elected as president, the effects racism had on America seemed to be improving with every little step made. Although everything seemed to be getting better each day, the tables have turned, and history seems to be repeating itself. Recently, a movement called #BlackLivesMatter has erupted across the nation, and has been a hot topic for the media.…
In order to complete this assignment, I visited the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture located on Pratt Street in Baltimore, Maryland. As noted by the museum’s name, the focus of the collections were on the experiences of African American people. I visited the permanent collection, which consists of exhibits about slavery, segregation, education, sports, music, performing arts, politics, community, and social adaptions. In addition to the permanent collection, I also visited the temporary exhibit titled “Sons” which held a series of photographs of African American men, each with a question that addresses the social stigma that they face. My brief interview was with a lovely woman who works at the front…
Throughout time, blacks have formed a group named “Black Lives Matter” to protest mostly against racism that they think exists today. This group has protested by marching through streets shouting things such as “What do we want? Dead Cops! When do we want it? Now!”…
In the 21st century, African-American had become one of the majorities of the American population; they have the right to vote, plenty of opportunities of receiving college education and pursuing the lives they want as ordinary American. However, it was not easy for most of the African American to succeed in life prior to 1980 century because people usually consider them as the gangsters or criminals. Therefore, African American had to work extremely hard so that they could become successful. This memoir was about the one of three African-American boys whose name was Sam, and how he succeeded on becoming the doctors when he was in struggles. He lived in Newark, New Jersey, and met with Rameck and George in University High; a high school that…
In the past, people of color have not been given the same rights as white people. Today, Black people in America are still being faced with discrimination, racism, injustice in court, police brutality, or simply being black. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement raises awareness for these problems that black Americans have to face everyday. People in the U.S.A deface BLM posters with “All Lives Matter”, they call BLM activists…
As years have passed the movement “Black Lives Matter has become a transformative outlet for all black people from different historical, cultural, socioeconomic and political identities. It is a source of solidarity for the survivors of colonization, exploitation, capitalism and police brutality.” ( Miah, Malik.) African Americans have used this movement to bring each other together and fight for what is still persistent, which is racism. There has been controversy about “BLM” which stretched the opinion that the movement was very racist.…
The Black Lives Matter movement (BLM) is one of good intentions, but a variety of flaws. The execution of BLM tends to be one that is counter-productive. The creators of the movement state that it is one that “…is an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise. It is an affirmation of Black folks’ contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression” (Black Lives Matter, 2016). The Black Lives Matter movement began after the death of Trayvon Martin when George Zimmerman was acquitted, and individuals felt a desire to bright to light the evident issue of anti-Black racism in our country (Black Lives Matter, 2016).…
Black Lives Matter is a movement that campaigns against institutional racism and brutality toward black people. It stands apart from previous movements advocating for equal treatment of the black community because it includes and even highlights the fringe groups like LGBT people, women, and the disabled. This type of intersectionality underscores the commitment the movement has to advocating on the behalf of all black people. This social movement is unique in another way as well because it uses social media as its main way of creating awareness, organizing, and promoting social change. Social movements rely mainly on a groups ability to share grievances and ability to organize.…
The Black Lives Matter movement is more than a call to action for police brutality, it’s a call for justice to stop the racial inequality that can still be seen today. It all started in 2013 when three women, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi, and Alicia Garza, created the hashtag #blacklivesmatter after Trayvon Martin was placed on trial for his own murder while George Zimmerman, the man who killed him, was not held accountable (Black Lives). Many people were angered by this, so with the help of cultural workers, artists, and designers, the movement was able to expand beyond a social media hashtag to what you see today, a full fledged civil rights movement (Black Lives). The movement grew even larger in 2014 after Michael Brown, a black, unarmed…
