African American Religion

Improved Essays
Religion plays an important part in the African American community. In my case it was something that was a strong part of my life and we spent a lot of time in church. We were told that a strong spiritual relationship would make me a better person. But as time went on this to me seemed a myth to me, because I saw people were not improving as people. These individuals were sick on a moral level and were lost spiritually.
They would tell us one thing and live their lives in an opposite manner. This journal entry is about my choice to leave the church for an undisclosed period of time. The person that I told this to was my foster mother Dorothy Jordan. This event happened at nineteen years of age, her reaction was a negative one after hearing

When looking back at this event, it makes me upset. She got upset because, I would not conform to her belief system. This is what’s wrong with religion to this day, if someone does not believe in your system they are wrong. This is the most foolish thing in the world and this type of thinking is destroying the world.
The thing that predispose me to this reaction was an event with a member of the same church. They said that if you did not go to church you would not see GOD. These are fear tactics used to control individuals and take their money. So I and this person argued for hours about this apparent lie, so when me and Dorothy had are disagreement it hit a nerve. These people would tell you if you did not give, your ten percent it was a curse on you.
This was dogma in my opinion there is not answer for everything and if someone says that they are lying. Some strengths that came from this experience was the ability to research topics. The ability to use my own judgment when someone comes with religion dogma. Another strength is the ability to stand by what I believe in when, it comes religious

To improve the area of trusting my judgement the author needs, to have more interpersonal conversations. These conversations helps one become one with one’s self, it helps me understand myself better. To better improve my skill of standing by my feelings on religious beliefs, one must have a full understanding of the topics being presented. One must also have the courage to question the people in leadership positions.
This is a major sticking point because, many churches are controlling people’s lives. I saw many people do things against their personal judgement, a please a clergy member. These leaders would take advantage of these people and leave them broken. One group that is taken advantage of a lot in church are single women. These leaders use these women for sexual purposes and then leave them broken inside.
This is one reason that many woman have left the church entirely. Many of these woman fear being sexually abused by men in the church. Instead of woman being protected by the people in church, they are mistreated. Some woman are comfortable with this environment, because they willing participate in these activities. But there are some woman that have a strong relationship with GOD. They will not participate in these activities in

In " The Wife of Bath" by Geoffrey Chaucer, marriage is always been seen as a holy sacrament. Marriage is something all women should do,it's an obligation to serve a man if not there other choice is to serve God. Marriage is a sacrament that should be pure only pure nothing in return to satisfy any needs. The funny thing is that a women named nana doesn't seem to have the same opinion about this as the church does. The contradiction in " The Wife of Bath" is that nana will not follow the norms that have been past for generations she will not care for her husband unless he serves her by an exchange of money in other words prostitution.…

Personally, I agree with the idea that the most important role of the Church and religion is to create a community where people can socialize. Although religion is a system of faith and worship for a god or gods, something important to get out of it is for people to interact and communicate with one another. This way, believers can openly discuss with each other the topic of their religion and share their spiritual needs. Additionally, through this community, many churches can host fundraisers and donations in order to meet the needs of people living in poverty and despair. The expectations for religious people to participate in service towards the community is proof of God’s guidance to help those in need.…

Church involvement was once a part of American life. People today are divided on the importance of going to church and religion. “The Barna Group stated that while 49% say it is somewhat or very important, the other 51% say it is not to, or at all important .” Times have changed and so has the American culture. People have more religious freedom than ever before and with that freedom they have a choice.…

There is an immense and ever increasing problem within the church that many have not even realized has developed right under their nose. This is the problem of appearances in the church becoming the main focus and even purpose of church gatherings. Imagine walking into a building full of men and women clothed in the trendiest fashions and designer shoes, some decked out in stylish tattoos, and carrying the newest (most updated/sleekest) tablets. All of these people are lingering around in clumps, chatting about the hottest gossip of the week or the new underground band they just started listening to. You look to your right and see a dimly lit coffee shop filled with inviting scents and a lengthy line, and then you peer to your left where there’s…

I thought Langston’s use of point of view in the essay was very interesting. By telling the story from his younger selves point of view, he was able to take a very individualized view of religion- for him, belief in Jesus came down to seeing or feeling his presence. This conditional belief was really interesting to see, because, almost to counter it, Hughes originally believed in Jesus, was excited to see him, and couldn’t wait for him to come. He was still unwilling to ‘be saved’, however, until he had actually seen or felt Jesus. Rather than merely believe in his existence, Hughes wanted to see or feel his presence, to truly find him.…

Types of Churchgoers Attending church has been a routine event for many Americans since the inception of the nation. It can be the only chance some Americans get to settle down and fellowship with friends and family after a long week of work. Motives for attending church have changed over the years, and it’s no longer a very devout group of people gathered together to become closer to God. Of course, there are still many devout Christians that attend, but many people aren’t.…

Women feel that they are not to take part in church services. This essay will address the role of women in the church; the positions of elder and deacon, women holding office, arguments against it, limitation, and what women contribute. The office of Elder, or Presbyter, was created to fill the role of preaching and teaching (Acts 20:28; 1 Pet, 5:1-4) the flock when the apostles were. An Elder is an authoritative role, with the Apostles, in church decisions and direction (Acts 11:30), necessitating moral fortitude, and sound biblical and doctrinal knowledge.…

The Church is sometimes referred to as the Bride of Christ in the Bible because in a sense, Jesus could be referred to as the Bridegroom of the Church. Of course, Jesus is not actually married to the Church, but saying so is just a form of symbolism. Jesus’ love for the Church can somewhat be compared to a husband’s love for his wife. As it is said in Ephesians 5:24-27, a wife must be subordinate to her husband like how the Church is subordinate to Jesus Christ. This makes sense because the Church is the whole congregation of everyone who believes in Jesus Christ.…

David Csinos, a well-known author and current professor at Emmanuel College of Victoria University, writes in his article, “Will Boys be Boys and Girls be Girls” the following, “Claims about God should not be founded on culture but only on the revelation of God - Jesus Christ.” When determining if the church is just, we must look at more than just the members of the church’s actions, but also what makes up the church, Jesus Christ. Furthermore, Quest for Justice, reads, “This is the mystery of our church, that all men and women are brothers and sisters, all one in Christ, all bear the image of the Eternal God.” The church was instituted by Christ, and God intended the Church to reflect him. Initially, this sounds like an excuse for the church.…
