Few murders have been highly publicized by the media, compared to the murders that take place every day. Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have elevated such cases that the news media would ultimately ignore. The cases of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, and many others, have started on social media until news media were pressured to pick up the stories. Social media has used “hashtags” to get the public to see what is happening online. For example, hashtags like #JusticeforTrayvon, #BlackLivesMatter, #MichaelBrown, and #TamirRice, have been and are continuing to circulate on social media, that many people have noticed and are informed of the cases.
Many older generations loathe the idea of social media, however they fail to realize the power of social media has, that can spread news quickly by the people and is not framed by the media. With technology, social media has let these deaths gain nationwide attention.
