As an African American woman, people tend to doubt my ability to do certain things because of my race and gender. I have learned to not live in their narrow perceptions of me but instead break through those barriers, not just to prove it to them but also to myself. Though the saying is cliché I do whole heartedly believe that if you put in enough effort and time into anything you can achieve your goals. This was the belief I had when I entered into my city’s pageant. There was a girl running in my division who had won a previous title for the teen division two years before. I did not let this deter me and decided that I at least wanted to place in the top three for the pageant. For months I practiced and recited my speech and walk until I could do it all based on memory. The day of the pageant came and in the end, I won first place and reigned in my city for over a year. During the course of the year, I did volunteer work, such as working with Ronald McDonald House, Rely for Life, and …show more content…
By keeping a positive attitude, it is possible overcome many things. I learned this when I joined the cross country team at my school. To be honest I hate to run but I had decided to join the team in order to make new friends, since it was the biggest team on campus. At my first 3 mile race, I came in last place, but despite this, my team cheered my on until I got to the finish line. I felt so loved and supported by this kind act that I decided that I would do the same for them. I would cheer on the other teams when they looked at little defeated because although it was race, I felt it was important for everyone involved to feel empowered so they would do the same for another runner. At the end of the season, I was awarded the Ohana Award by my coach, which symbolized that he believe that I had helped to unite the team and that became one of my proudest

However, Humle argued that “certainly, there was a commercial angle to pageants from the beginning of the movement, as small historic town aimed to stimulate a growing market for tourism.” This is supported by Dean MacCannel as he argued that “for moderns, reality and authenticity are thought to be elsewhere: in other historical periods and other cultures, in purer, simpler lifestyles.” Although this argument suggests that pageantry was connected to the historical past as an attempt to retrieve what was felt to be lost, it is essential to emphasise that such commercial perspective cannot be applied in the interwar pageantry. This is particularly because unlike the Edwardian pageantry which incorporated the history of a town and did not include…

“Never ever accept ‘Because you are a woman’ as a reason for doing or not doing anything”. To me, this quotation by author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie perfectly summarizes the Walk Tall talk by Jannette Taylor. This quote explains that though someone may be a woman, she can do anything she wants to do; she can do anything that is acceptable for a man to do. She continued by saying that life is too short to not be yourself; life is too short to not take; life is too short to not strive for what you want just because others may look down upon that. You get one short life so you should live your life the way you want and not let your race, gender, or naysayers get in the way of it.…

Tradition in Native and African Americans “Traditions are imploding and exploding everywhere - everything is coming together, for better or worse, and we can no longer pretend we 're all living in different worlds because we 're on different continents”(Glass). Traditions can be in the form of verbal that is passed down through generation, whether they be song or tales, also they can be written or an activity. When the immigrants from over seas came over to the United States, the traditions of the Native Americans, as well as African American were torn apart and strip of their meaning. Lullaby written by Leslie Marmon Silko who is a Native American, and The Eatonville Anthology written by Zora Neale Hurston who was African American portrays how tradition was stripped of their true meaning by the whites that were in the United States. These pieces of literature are alike in their…
