The melting pot metaphor implies both a melting of cultures and inter marriages of ethnicities, yet cultural assimilation or acculturation can also occur without inter marriage. Thus African- Americans are fully culturally integrated into American culture and institutions. The salad bowl concepts suggests that the integration of the many different cultures of United States residents combine like a salad, as opposed to the more traditional notion of a cultural melting pot.

One does not have to give up their ethnicity to become American. We can have common American values and still focus on what makes us unique. If you wanted a one hundred percent complete melting pot, then you must cast off the incompatible parts of your former culture in order to become part of the new culture. If you happened to follow a line of traditions, then you are risking the disadvantage of those traditions changing and possibly disappearing overtime. I once read a quote and it said “ there is more to culture than spicy food and colorful clothes.” If you so happen to love the art, music, and food, that doesn’t mean your going to love magic being replaced for science or forced polygamy or even honor killings. The value of our differences being way more important than the value of our commonalities, in improving human ingenuity at the ever expanding fringe of evolution. In a melting pot you must keep the individual ingredients discernible, and not let it turn to a homogenous mash by which all people behave in similar ways.
