Personal Reflection On African Americans

This course was something I thought would be of a big interest for me personally. Being a communications major I have taken the same basic classes for two and a half years now. During my freshman year I took an introductory class about African American history and thought this would be something that would draw my attention. African Americans in the history of our country have been put down for far to long starting from the time of slavery up until basically now where we are still seeing race issues in our country. During the first class period we talked about what we thought leadership was. Personally I believe leadership is the ability for a person to mobilize a group of people toward a common goal. The person must have some sort of charisma …show more content…
He joined the contract buyers club, which was a group of black homeowners in Chicago who wanted equal treatment then the others. Personally being from Chicago this was something that I had never known about and found to be irritating. Another thing I myself found to be unfair was the treatment of the houses African Americans lived in compared to white Americans. In Coats article he talks about Weatherspoon who visited her white friends houses and realized not only were they getting ripped off with the price of the houses but also what was inside. At the end of slavery the major labor force in the south were African Americans and whites took advantage of that. Although black people were free of slavery. In the south they passed what was called Black Codes. They were laws that basically restricted the freedom of many African Americans. Making them work terrible labor jobs with minimal pay. Another big topic that we spoke on during class was the idea of ideology. Ideology is a coherent set of beliefs that brings order to our understanding of how society works. African Americans in our nations past have been though a lot more then many of us may think. Though the first few readings I have already learned more then I would have thought and am excited for this semester to

In today’s society, racism, prejudice, and stereotyping is often frowned upon and seen as politically incorrect. This wasn’t always the case, because just four decades ago, racism, prejudice and stereotyping was seen as a social norm. However, thanks to great leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Andrew Goodman and many others, we as people are allowed to live in a more diverse and welcoming environment that gives equal rights and respect to everyone no matter race, size, or country of origin. Although it is important to recognize the progress we have made throughout the years, it is also crucial that students are aware and understand the numerous obstacles that people of color had to go through, to further appreciate…

Throughout history the National Honor Society has become synonymous with the best of the best. A school club that has built a legacy on students who exemplify the ideals of leadership, service, character, and citizenship. To even be considered for a group of this nature would be an honor within itself. Leadership is simply defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization however, I believe leadership to be much more than simply being in charge. True leadership is simply more than being bossy and I have learned this through my experiences within boy scouts.…

How is leadership defined? Is it the ability to achieve followers, or the ability to make the right decisions? Some lead out of fear, others out of logic and reasoning. Entry 1 I am nervous and excited for this class. I want to know and understand the systemic oppression people of color face, but I am afraid, and embarrassed, that I know so little in the first place. The only background I have for this course is that I live in America and I read The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. She argues mass incarceration is the new Jim Crow. Alexander’s book was so shocking to me that I just wanted to know more, like what the social implication are of this type of oppression.…

During the 20th century and throughout the course of history up until the present day, there have been immense racial injustices inflicted upon African-Americans. After the conclusion of the Civil War, in 1865, African-Americans received their “freedom” however this freedom was short-lived due to the amount of racial tensions that existed in America during the late 19th century and throughout the 20th century. The treatment of this group of people was horrendous and despicable. However, African-Americans sought to make their everyday lives easier by fighting for what they believed in, which was racial equality for all colors of people. Many moved to the North, where slavery, although still legal, became less common. African Americans, both slave and free, made significant contributions to the economy by working on road rails and roads, canals, and the construction of cities. Even though slaves migrated up north, they were able to gain a little bit of freedom. It wasn’t as much as the white males in the society, but they were at least treated better than the African American slaves in the south. By the early 1800s, many whites and free blacks in Northern states began to call for the abolition of slavery.…

In my opinion, leadership is an art that influences others to attain a common goal. An effective leader should be humble and strong; someone who can give and take advices to and from others. One cannot be a leader if one cannot follow. In my community, I have had a chance to live by example by volunteering my time to helping others. Furthermore, I am actively involved in school activities, such as choir and other activities that inspire others to make a difference.…
