Part One- Plot The play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry is about a struggling african american family in the 1950’s that just recieved a check for $10,000 and are trying to bring their life together. Before the play, Lena’s husband, who is the father of Walter and Beneatha Younger, passed away. His death was the inciting event because the insurance company will send a check to help their family. When the play starts, Walter's wife, Ruth, is cooking in the kitchen while their son, Travis, is sleeping on the couch because he does not have a bed of his own. The departure point of the play is when Travis is waking up and the family is arguing about sharing a bathroom in such a small house and about how they do not have much money. He wants to invest and start his own liquor company so his family could thrive. He has big dreams and a goal for his family, but Ruth does not believe in him. The major dramatic question that appears is “Will Walter be able to help his family?” because he sees how unhappy they are and has an opportunity to make their lives better with the insurance money from his father’s death. Along the way there are some complications. The first being when Ruth falls to the ground sick and goes to the hospital only to find out that she is two months pregnant. She did not mean to get pregnant and thinks that she has to get an abortion in order to keep her family financially stable. When she goes to tell Walter about the baby he does not want to listen to her because he is too stressed out about his job and the money. They get into a fight and his mother, Lena, has to tell him about the pregnancy. This is a complication because the baby was unplanned and Walter does not want to see Ruth suffer through an abortion. Another death in the family would be devastating and make them all more sad and anxious around each other. I have my wife Ruth and our son Travis. The house used to belong to my father before he passed so I share it with my mama and sister Beneatha. Now that my father’s gone I have to be the man of the house, but I ain’t got a job that makes enough money for all of us. I work as a chauffeur, driving rich white men around all day. I’m still young, I can work hard and make more money than any of us could imagine. Me and the boys thought of the best idea on how to do it too. With the insurance money I’m going to get from my father, we can invest it and start our own business and open up a liquor store. Liquor stores make all the money these days. My wife doesn’t seem to think it’s a very good idea though. All she does is nag at me and tell me to go to work. She needs to see that I’m trying to make our lives better. I’m going to give is enough money to buy a house, fancy new cars, and pay for Beneatha’s medical schooling. I wish she would trust me but she doesn’t.
