As of today, elders are living longer and have more active, healthier lives. Over 77 million baby boomers turning the age of 65 at a rate of 10,000 per day, the United States is experiencing historic growth in the 65-plus demographic (NCOA, 2012). But it also studies have been shown that African American elders are a lower life expectancy than other races. Even though African Americans have a lower life expectancy it has been shown that African American elders confident about what the future holds for them with health and also happiness. The majority of African American elders is content with their communities and will continue to live in the community, because of the support and assistance of their family members. The findings was that African American daughters have a strong sense of filial responsibility which made elders less likely to the use of formal services. In another 1994 study, the results were also similar. There were filial obligation and intergenerational ties with caregivers caring for elders with dementia.
So, therefore assistance from family continues as the primary support (Rallying Points, 2002). Which I believe it is always best for the elders to always have that support from family. The more support they have the longer they will in my opinion. From the CHIS data (California African Americans and Aging, 2013) it shows that at least 50,000 California African Americans over the age of 50 receive care that is informal because 8 percent of people indicated that they care for a parent.
It has been said by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) that African Americans whether at birth, at age 65, or at age 75, life expectancy tends to be lower than for non-Hispanic whites. As of 2010, it was expected for a 65 year old black man to live another 15.9 years, compared to a white man at the same age with 17.7 years. A black woman age 65 is expected to live another 19.3 years, and that is a full year less than a white woman of that age. There also has been recent research on life …show more content…
Stroke was the third main cause of death for older blacks and Hispanics (California African Americans and Aging, 2013.)
Steffens and colleagues (2009) found that when it comes to depression it was about equal in gender but it was a lot higher when it came to older whites and Hispanics than among older African Americans. Other studies that do not include elders with a disability tend to have higher rates of depression with African Americans than whites.
Conclusion
When I was doing research on the topic of my paper I would of never expected race would have something to do with life expectancy. I believe that since African Americans have lower expectancy rates caregivers have to be there for them to grow stronger and older. Not just African Americans but all elders. Whether it is family and formal care someone has to be there for them. But it is also great that African American and also other elder have a positive outlook on life and all they want is happiness and positive health for the
