The name “Charleston” was given to the dance by the Europeans but the African Americans call it the Juba or Djouba.
The banjo was considered an african instrument in america until the 1840s. Minstrel shows used the banjo as part of their Blackface acts. The blacks then abandoned the banjo and the whites took it as their own invention. The other instruments that survived the Middle Passage were
