Black codes were laws passed in 1865 and 1866 in the former Confederate states to limit the rights and freedoms of African Americans. These terrible codes were constructed for three purposes. To limit their rights by only allowing them to marry, own property, sue in court, earn wages, and work for low skill level jobs. Southerner plantation owners wanted to get replacements for all their freed slaves. So, the office claimed any African American without a occupation would get arrested and hired out again to previous slave owners for their plantations.
