Interview on African American athlete I interviewed a high school classmate I had a couple years back. He was a standout high school star and had skills like a professional NFL Player. He was 5’10, muscular build, and 220lbs and literally carried the team on his back during his time at Hendrickson High school. It was a surprise to see him because I haven’t seen in him a while and I had a friend set us up a meeting because of his busy schedule as Texas Tech football athlete. I asked him about our high school coach, and he said to me that he learned how to be more of a professional athlete rather than his time at Texas Tech. Kenny simply said that his coaches in high school were more “understanding” then high collegiate level coaches and that …show more content…
He started to settle down realizing that his cockiness would not get him far in his football car. He mentioned me about many memorable matches he had during his time at Hendrickson High school, he had 200+ yards and 3 touchdowns for the two games he played against Pflugerville during his sophomore and junior year. I asked him about how his life came around with girls, claiming that he was a king at Hendrickson. Kenny remembered that girls would want to be his girlfriend, and that he didn’t have the time to do any of it because he was busy with school and football. He found a girlfriend his junior year and that seemed to settle everything down with him and many of the girls would stop pursuing him because of it. His senior he got many offers from colleges all over the world, and decided to pick Texas Tech after all. As of now he is a senior at Texas Tech, switching to the linebacker position because his coaches thought he would play that position better. Kenny plans to enter the NFL draft after graduating and if things don’t go in his favor, he plans to pursue something with his nutrition

"Texas Forever" is a mantra Tim Riggins, the main character in the television series, Friday Night Lights, lives by. The premise of the show is how an entire town base their dreams on the game of football and we learn those dreams do not come without compromise. It is easy to identify with the characters in Friday Night Lights because their lives and their situations are believable. When we base our life upon a dream or the person we believe we deserve to be, it can be a tragedy or it can be motivational, especially if that spiritual place is not a place at all, but a feeling, a hope or a dream.…

Gates says that the truth is society only shows African American kids the hero’s of their favorite sports and not the notable names of African American doctors and lawyers. As a result of this “too many African American youngsters still believe that they have a much better chance of becoming another Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan than they do of matching the achievements of Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke or neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson, both of whom, like Johnson and Jordan are black”(Gates, 382). African American kids are only shown their sports hero’s for guidance and as a result believe athletics is their only true calling. Gates does a great job demonstrating that African American kids’ minds are brainwashed into thinking that sports are their future simply because society does not show them that they can anything else. Something else Gates does well in his essay is show the non African American readers that the way they depict the African American stereotype as athletic, is wrong and unfair to their effnictiy.…

In the context of this class, and after learning about the history of African-American’s, or the black race, this entire preamble needs to be re-written if we are to say that it represents all Americans, or the “People of the United States.” In no way, shape, or form does this preamble to the Constitution represent equality, or togetherness as a society. At the time that the document was signed on September 17, 1787 and ratified on June 21, 1788, the Constitution included the Three-Fifths Compromise, found in Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3. This compromise meant that only 3 out of every 5 slaves would be counted as persons, so as to provide the southern states with more seats in the House of Representatives and more electoral votes. In addition…
