American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ)
The American Friends of Jamaica is a non-profit organization which supports Jamaican charitable organizations and social initiatives which aim to improve the lives of Jamaicans in the areas of education, healthcare and economic development. AFJ was founded in 1982 by Jamaicans and Americans who are passionate about Jamaica’s development and prosperity. This organization has risen more than U$12 million to date on behalf of Jamaica’s non-profit and charitable organizations. AFJ advocates for the improvement of the lives of Jamaicans by supporting initiatives that promote independence, healthy communities and strengthen the nation.

The charity was founded to assist children with heart disease around the world. Professor Yacoub has been treating patients in Jamaica since the early 1960’s and in 1996, Jamaica became the first beneficiary country of the charity. Since then, Chain of Hope has treated over 400 Jamaican children with heart disease and has organized a team locally in Jamaica who is trained by the charity to set up a cardiac service for the local population as part of its long-term goal.
Chain of Hope is now working on a project in collaboration with the Ministry of Health to develop a cardiac centre of excellence for the English-speaking Caribbean at Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston. The new cardiac unit will be equipped with state of the art medical equipment funded by Chain of Hope and its international partners.
