One reason why Canada’s military was sent to Afghanistan during the war is to help develop Afghanistan. Canada had helped develop Afghanistan during the war and the Afghans were thankful for the help. Canada’s general objective was to rebuild the country as a “stable, democratic and self-sufficient society”(mapleleafweb.com n.p). Canadian governments pledged to spend one billion dollars in the development, making Afghanistan the largest single recipient of Canadian aid. Canada’s military focused four objectives on Kandahar. It included: maintaining a secure environment and the establishment of law and order, providing jobs and education, providing humanitarian assistance to people in need, and enhancing the management and security of the Afghanistan border(mappleleafweb.com). Canada sent a provincial reconstruction team to Kandahar, which had two hundred military and civilian personnel. Their job was to assist in reconstructing the war-torn province. A thirty two year veteran soldier had written in his letter, “I see people with jobs working hard for a living.”(torontosun n.p). When Canada had committed two hundred and twenty seven million dollars in the assistance, they had a focus in promoting and protecting of the rights of women and girls. When they sent Canada’s military to help out with promoting, a Canadian soldier said, “I see schools with young children eager to learn. I see girls, young girls, in school and getting an education.”(torontosun.com n.p). The soldier talks about what he sees in Afghanistan because of the efforts they have put into the war. The funding was able to make forty nine family health houses. It allowed women and children to have quality health service and training for women to become health professionals. Without the help of Canada’s military, the girls, children and women will not be able to have what they have today. Canada is also working with the Afghan government to support the Elimination Of Violence Against Women (EVAW)(Afghanistan.gc.ca n.p).
